DivX 3.11 alpha and WSHTCPIP.DLL

I attempted to install DivX 3.11 Alpha on a Win7 64-bit partition and it killed my sound. Reinstalling sound drivers didn't work, removing DivX didn't work, and I keep getting error messages about a WSHTCPIP.DLL even though it's the exact same WSHTCPIP.DLL that the partition has always had (and which the Win7 partition on my other computer has)

WTF is going on and can it be fixed without formatting the hard drive?

Also, keep in mind that error messages very often DO NOT mean what they say...

1) DivX 3.11 — seriously: ¿why? :confused:

2) It's never advised to install very-ancient software on new/recent operating systems... especially IF/when you insist on having all of the "latest and greatest" :rolleyes: "updates". Just as an example, one day I installed the old AND good DScaler5 MPEG-2 decoder on this Windows 7 machine and found out there was a ¿minor? bug in its configuration applet... so I uninstalled DScaler5.

I have modified the install script so it won't install any audio codecs, just divx3 and divx4 video codecs. That should solve you problem. Uninstall your previous version and then right-click on "DivX.inf" and install.

The usual procedures...

1. Restore your system partition from a recent image backup.

If you do not make backups, then
2. Use the Windows Sytem Restore function.

Not as reliable as an image backup, but still...

If you have disabled System Restore then try
3. Remove DivX using a good third party uninstall software.

The Revo Uninstaller is probably the best choice, the free version is very good.

4. Search the Internet to find out if others had the same issue and see if you can find helpful advice.


If nothing helps then you may have to reinstall Windows.

And please no complaining. You have been around long enough to know that not making regular backups is completely unacceptable. No backups - no compassion... :o

Because a long time ago, some idiot encoded a video with the Div3 fourcc instead of the DivX fourcc, and some other idiot decided that XviD should be able to decode the latter but not the former. 2001 was such a wonderful time.

I have modified the install script so it won't install any audio codecs, just divx3 and divx4 video codecs. That should solve you problem. Uninstall your previous version and then right-click on "DivX.inf" and install.

While that may be useful if I ever need DivX 3 again in the distant future, I don't see how it is helpful with regard to the current problem.

You don't need such ancient codec. You can use LAV Filters to decode it. If you need a VFW codec, then ffdshow can be used.

Div3 is a modified MS MPEG4 codec. It's a bit different than the Divx/Xvid MPEG-4 format.

Regarding the audio issue, it could be a missing audio driver value in the driver32 registry key that is used by codecs. Use Codec Tweak Tool (http://codecguide.com/download_other.htm#codectweaktool) and run its fixes.

Okay never mind. The real problem was that some idiot neglected to tick the checkbox for "yes, I want Xvid to decode stuff with the 3ivX fourcc" when she installed XviD on her laptop.

Now that the laptop's hard drive has been nuked (and then physically replaced because it was dying) and the operating systems and XviD have been reinstalled, the problem has been fixed and prevented, and I have learned a valuable lesson.
