View Full Version : Suggestions for UHD downscale and UHD encodes?

I've been trying to go through an encode most of my collection to save space on not having full discs or remuxes of everything.

Some of these I'm downscaling to 1080p currently using crf 11 and slow preset. Time wise that isn't bad so far with two and a half hour movies taking about 8 hours. For resize options, is there a major difference between using bicubic and spline36? Secondly, is it worth bumping up qcomp from .6 to .7? Would it be worth going to 1440p instead of 1080p too?

For UHD encodes I've tried a few different settings and the only thing I know for sure right now is 2-pass has been god awful. Right now these are the settings I plan on using. I don't have a lot of experience with it so I'm more than open to suggestions on anything I should tweak or change.

--crf 16 --preset slow --output-depth 10 --rd 6 --qcomp 0.8 --hdr10-opt --repeat-headers --hrd --aud --deblock 2:-2

I'm also using StaxRip for all of this.

How did to come to that conclusion? It is important to use two pass when testing various options so if that does not work for you I suspect something is wrong.

I had tried it a few times on 10 minutes sections of different movies and every time it was extremely pixelated to the point where I couldn't make out certain scenes. I'm assuming it's something I'm doing wrong because the bitrate very rarely went over 6000kbps.

Two pass has worked great for my normal BluRays though.

During two pass you manually set the bitrate, maybe you set it too low?

... --deblock 2:-2Don't you mean --deblock -2:-2 ?

save space .....I'm downscaling to 1080p......using crf 11
I fail to see the logic in any of this.
