I've encoded alot of DivX films, but I've never bothered looking into VCD. What's the quality like compared to DivX? All I know is you have a restricted resolution and you can only hold 74 minutes on a cd. Sounds like it's alot mores suitable for tvs than pcs.

Hell no. VCD is worse than divx in any aspect. If you really need standalone capability look into SVCD, but in terms of bang for the size, nothing beats mpeg4.
