It is my understanding that x264 requires roughly around 50% less bitrate than Xvid for the same quality.
Is the same true for VP8?
When compared to x264, how much more or less bitrate does VP8 require percentually to produce similar quality?

i think x264 uses ~10% less bitrate than vp8

Honestly, libvpx struggled to match a well encoded x264 stream with vp9, let alone vp8. This is probably at least as much a limitation of the encoder implementations than the bitstream.
