Welcome, everyone!

The other moderators and I thought it was reasonable to finally have a dedicated sub-forum for VP9 and AV1 :)

I ported over some of the bigger threads from 'New and alternative video codecs'. Please let us know if there's any more you'd like moved over.

Yeah, it's around time for AV1 at least.

Does it make sense to include VP9 and AV1 in the same? VP9 usage was already quite low and looks to be supplanted by AV1 for its use cases. I suppose they do have a lot of the same heritage, scenarios, and shared elements of reference encoders.

I think it does. VP9 talk is pretty quiet at this point anyway :)

You should change the subheading of this forum from 'All about VP9 and AV1' to All about the VP9 and AV1 video codecs created by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM)'

You should rename 'High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)' to 'High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)/h.265' just like the h264 forum.

You should create a new forum for VVC.

You should rename the forum 'MPEG-4 Encoder GUIs' to 'Video Encoder GUIs' as those programs can encode to lots of different video codecs not just MPEG-4.

you should also change this subheading 'WMV9/VC-1, RealVideo (RV9/RV10) VP6/7, Snow, Theora, Dirac, etc.' to 'WMV9/VC-1, RealVideo (RV9/RV10) VP6/7/8, Snow, Theora, Dirac, etc.' i.e adding VP8 to the list.

You should get rid of the AutoGK forum and move the most important topics from there into the Video Encoder GUI's forum instead as hardly anyone uses that program anymore or posts to that forum.

You should move the following 2 topics to this forum:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=178530

So, we're not trying to make any other big structural changes at this juncture, but thanks for your suggestions.

I'm happy to move those threads into this forum.

I was lurking you while you were creating the section and I was like "yes, we probably need it at this point in time".
I'm really not much into Google stuff as they're a "no no" in broadcast, however at some point I had to look at VPx 'cause we were downloading so many videos from YouTube for our news channel that it was impossible to ignore them.

VP9 talk is pretty quiet at this point anyway :)

True. Even Google is silently replacing many videos on YouTube with AV1 encoded ones from what I can see...

You should rename 'High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)' to 'High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) / H.265' just like the h264 forum.
You should create a new forum for VVC.

+1 for that.
This way we would have:

MPEG-4 AVC / H.264
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) / H.265
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) / H.266

Which makes things look consistent.

Well, if we were wanting to rename forums, we'd probably want to do this for consistency:

Option A

MPEG-4 Part 10 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) / H.264
MPEG-H Part 2 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) / H.265
MPEG-I Part 3 Versatile Video Coding (VVC) / H.266

Or maybe:

Option B

Advanced Video Coding (AVC) / H.264
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) / H.265
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) / H.266

Well, yes, definitely. Option B is better since very few people call them MPEG-4, MPEG-H, MPEG-I.
If you'll ever rename the sections of the forum, I would definitely be happy with option B. :)

p.s one of things I like about Doom9 is that it didn't change a bit, it's always the same, without fancy useless graphic interfaces I see on other forum and without ads. On top of that, it's blazing fast even on poor network conditions (except when there was a huge number of people all connected at once on the server a few months ago, but that was an exception). I like it the way it is. It feels like home now (the forum and the community). :')

I don't actually have the ability to make those changes, but if this does come up I'll definitely suggest option B above :)

It's honestly not a huge deal. But VP9 was created by Google, not AOM. AOM based AV1 largely on Google's VP10 effort, with contributions from Thor, Daala, and some other innovations from the AV1 effort.

Having an AOM category makes sense as work on AV2 has already commenced. But there's no actual problem with how things are set up now.
