I originally posted this on the audio encoding forum, but perhaps this is a better place:
Trying to follow the new Ogg guide, I started to extract an ac3 using the method described in the "ac3 procedures" guide. Using vstrip I am able to create a new audio only vob, but when i try to proccess this file in DVD2AVI I cannot - I can only save project when a video vob is loaded. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Well I'm not sure what method you want, but you can open smartripper with the proper dvd, enable stream processing, select the track you want only (no video or other tracks), and check demux to extra file. Rip and bingo.

I was trying to follow the "Ogg Vorbis Audio & Ogg Media Streams" guide, for which I need an ac3 file. I already have the vobfiles on my hard drive from a previous rip, and so I followed the guide on "ac3 procedures" to extract an ac3 from a vob using vStrip. As indicated in the guide, I ended up with a vob file that essentially just contained the sound (no video information), at a sixe of around 300MB. At this point, I am unsure how to proceed, as i now have an audio vob file, but still no ac3 track. The next sgment ofthe guide indicates using dvd2avi to extract the ac3 from the vob, but this only seems to work when loading the full (video) vob, and not the newly created audio vob file.
In summary, how can I extract the a3 file from the udio only vob file?
Thanks

I opened the newly created .vob file in graphedit, and it automatically loaded the filters for mpeg2 splitter, etc. I deleted the ending filters and added a "dump" ("file writer" wouldn't work) to an .ac3 file. In the end, I had a 149 Mb ac3 file. I then used besweet to convert this to a .wav file, which weighed in at an impressive 1.16 Gb. I sent this file through oggdrop and ended up with a 93.1 Mb .ogg file. My original sound file (mp3/wav via the vob2audio method)was 73.5 Mb.
As I understand it, the ogg method should reduce this size by about 5Mb, not increase it drastically, so, i repeat my previous plead - please help me!

If you have an audio/video vob, you can open it in DVD2AVI, and select "demux all tracks" under dolby digital, and save the project. The d2v file is irrelevant, but you'll have an ac3 file.
Now your graphedit method seems to have worked, so I don't see the problem. If you want a smaller ogg file, right-click in oggdrop, select encoding options, and move the quality slider to the left.

The problem is that I have an audio ONLY vob, so I cannot save it in dvd2avi (option is grayed out).
In terms of size and quality, I encoded another movie using the full vob files to get my ac3 via dvd2avi, then I used oggdrop with the same settings, and my final final was 5 Mb smaller than the corresponding mp3/wav file via vob2audio. So I'd like to keep the same quality settings (4.90), and have the file smaller than the mp3 encoded at the same bitrate.
