Encoding like TCF and Fastempire

I have lotr and oceans 11 svcd and was wondering how these guys encode so well. They look like dvds almost! So can someone tell me what they encode with and what settings they are useing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

I have read most of the guides and have tried dvd2svcd and tmpg. I still cant get quality this good with cce and tmpg useing the same settings they use.

ntsc vcd (480x480, 29.97fps)
video: 1902Kbit Avg. 2-Pass VBR, 2450Kbit Max
audio: 224kbits 44.1khz

Only 2 pass VBR ? More passes mean best use of the bitrate.
Maybe some smoothing filters can help compression too !

sometimes mpeg1 can look better than mpeg2 even at vcd res espesially if you use vbr and audio 160kbs.

i only use vcd and every one i do looks no different to the dvd
even when i use vbr to fit up to 95 minutes on 1 cd still looks good

also I suggest always using "highest quality(very slow)"for motion search presision in tmpegenc.

what exactly does this setting do? An how much of a difference in size/quality does it make to the end result mpg2? I usually use 'high(slow)' setting. Will 'highest' make that much difference?

not much difference-maybe 2-3%.but if your a perfectionist.........

the end result from tempgenc is only as good as what your origonal files are
eg vob-vcd good
vcd -svcd depends on origonal file bitrate etc
