I can't use DivX 4 with Nandub, so is there another solution?

Hah! I see now that my FAQ is slightly missleading. Nandub cannot encode in DivX 4m but VirtualDub can. However Nandub can do VBR MP3's but Vdub can't. What you do for DivX 4 movies with VBR MP3's is encode the video in VirtualDub, then mux the audio in Nandub later. Hope this clears this up.

Hmm...then I'm in a dilemma. Here's what I'm trying to do: I've been ripping a lot of my anime collection, and instead of ripping one episode at a time, I copy the whole disc with SmartRipper; this simplifies aligning audio and subtitles. I encode the audio with lame separately. I then use VirtualDub to segment the episodes, which is where VirtualDub's inability to handle VBR mp3s is causing problems. If I segment the video only, then I have to resync audio in the end.

Right now, I end up having VirtualDub mux uncompressed WAV, and then demux it again, encode to mp3, then remux it with Nandub. Obviously this is tedius and inefficient.

Any hope that VBR support will make it into the next version of VirtualDub? I'd assume that it should be trivial, since the source of Nandub is available...

Why not use nandub to segment the episodes? Just set 'video->direct stream copy' and everything will work just fine together with a complete mp3 file.
Take a look at the news page of VirtualDub's homepage (http://www.virtualdub.org). There ( 12/02/2001 ) Avery explains exactly why he will never support VBR MP3 (or VBR anything)

1. This is assuming that I encode the whole DVD into DivX; I only rip the whole DVD, but then I segment out each episodes (stripping the intro / ending usually), and have VirtualDub encode each segment as a separate job. This has the advantage of being a little bit faster (less data to encode), and that I don't have to run Divx4log to set keyframe in between episodes after 1st pass, so I can let it run overnight and have everything done next morning.

2. I see...I suppose it's Microsoft's fault then. Then considering that QuickTime will be soon MPEG-4 compliant, is there any hope that VirtualDub'll be able to output in QuickTime format instead? This is assuming that Apple doesn't make the same mistakes...

I remember I also asked this myself here quite some time ago and only gabest replied to that thread. Have a look at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=76357 So I wonder whether the VDub FAQ#5 (VirtualDub can only mux CBR MP3's when they have a wave-header. It cannot mux VBR streams whatsoever. For VBR MP3/Ogg/AC3 muxing, use Nandub) can be considered accurate. The first part about VirtualDub and cbr/vbr mp3 is of course correct and this is the way I always do the mux (of course I'm using only cbr mp3). However, the last one about NanDub is not IMHO precise: even if you mux a soundless avi with a CBR mp3 in NanDub and then open the avi in VirtualDub 1.4.8, you get a warning that VBR audio settings were used in the mux and there is something messed up (although you cannot notice it since all the players are using DS filters for playback). I noticed that if you stream copy the video/audio in VirtualDub, the produced avi is slightly smaller and it plays just fine (no audio sync problems, like those implied in the VDub warning message). Any thoughts?

Oh, and btw, please don't mention that NanDub can mux ogg audio, this is obsolete and can create confusion to newcomers...
