Pioneer or HP Burner ???

Hi guys,

I now have spare enough money to buy my first dvd burner :) and of course want to make the best choice !!!
I have looked in this forum, as well as on www.vcdhelp.com, but I still can't decide me for a burner.

-> My PC Config:
Athlon XP
Via Chipset
512 Ram
Pioneer DVDRom (IDE)

-> DVD Player
Pioneer DV-444

-> I want to backup movies to play them on my DV-444.

-> Just give me your objective advice and share your experience with those products...

I think you should consider the most important difference between them: Pionner uses DVD-R/DVD-RW discs and HP uses DVD+RW discs, so do a little research and get the best for your needs.

Of course it will be the best solution to choose Pioneer DVD-R for a Pioneer DVD-Player!

I have the exact combination of devices here.

Pioneer DVR-A03 and a Pioneer DV-444

I can play any DVD-R Medium on my DVD-Player recorded by the A03.
Pioneer, Princo, Maxell...whatever.

So...it´s on you to choose.

I havent used anything +rw yet, but -r and -rw seem to be a bit more of the standard, you might be safer with the AO3...otherwise your burner might end up in your basement storage closet next to your beta vcr collection.

when you will only backup movies, to play them on
your DVDPlayer, save the money and make VCD or SVCD
with the same effect.
But when you will backup your DVD`s, i would save the money too
because you have only a capacity of 4.7 GB and you need for
a full DVD Backup at least >6 GB !!!

I will go with a Pioneer as HP and Philips are close to a Class law suit over the DVD+R thing (If they will not be able to implement it)
Also HP are soon to be gone, becoming part of Compaq.
The future if the company is unknown (not that they had a good name before) :rolleyes:

I will put the quality of my burned DVD's into test with the quality of your VCD's, and S-VCD's every day.
Some people value the picture quality more then you, not to mention that not every one allways think of DVD Backup.
Some of us actually have clients who pay them to author DVD's.

It all boil down to what you need.

In my case I consider DVD to be low quality deu to the Mpg2 compression and the limited data rates :rolleyes:
I dare not think of VCD's and such, as I will loose all clients.

But for home uses this are valid options :o

The quality of a good svcd is actually remarkabley great, and dare I say, equivalent to that of a brand new VHS tape (if not better at times). Need I remind you that half the world STILL USES VHS. Not to mention that at one point in time, you only had tape, period. The clarity of a CD can be much better than that of a vinyl, in similar comparison's, but you will never see me pick a cd over a record (unless it's in a non-turntable friendly envirement of course).

S-VCD is nice but it have it's problems (res/play time).

What I think of is actally with this new DVD standard they will be able to have much higher quality video on them.

True, lot's of this space will go for HDTV, that require about 3-4 times more data per picture, but still they will be able to use higher data rates, and maybe even some uncompressd codec.

BTW- forget about Dvix for this stuff. They might be able to play it out- but comercial titles will use somthing else.

I am trying to write somthing to explain it as I understand it (new DVD/DviX 5) but not any time soon. :stupid:
