About encoder profile

Hi guys,

The thing is I´m using Handbrake to encode my MKVs and in Encoder profile I don´t know what to set up if Main or High?

I mean, I check with mediainfo and the original MKvs says high@4.1

So far I had not noticed about this Main or High and I encode various MKVs in Main and I can watch on my TV all those without any problem

So, for see whats happens I tried encode with High profile and Main profile some movies and the same movie previously encoded with High get almost 1gb more size

But something that I confused is, what I get with High comparate with Main? quality? or compatibility?

I don´t know, like I said I watched various MKV movies and play and the video quality is excellent

You don´t have any idea how much I will appreciate your help and if you could help me so I´ll get clear about all this?

Set High Profile Level 4.0. That will allow great quality and good compatibility.

High profile allows more encoding features (=better compression).
Level 4.0 will make sure it's compatible with almost all modern devices while usually not limiting too much to reduce quality visibly.

If you use two pass and target the same size which looks better?

CRF is only constant quality with exactly the same settings, and not really even then depending on the content. Computers still do not have a way to accurately measure quality from an average human's perspective. Changing the profile is very much changing the settings.

Never use the size of the resulting crf encode to decide which setting is better. You need to adjust the crf value to get exactly the same final size or use two pass. So, to avoid encoding many times, use two pass when comparing setting.

Usually the choice is between High and Baseline. Main is a weird choice today because it was effectively replaced by High. Baseline is much easier to decode but worse quality while Main is basically the same difficulty as High, and almost everything supports High today, so High is a better choice. Baseline is only useful if a device doesn't support high, but in that case it would not support main either. Even very low end CPUs are able to decode Baseline in software so it is still sometimes useful while Main is simply not enough easier to be useful over high.

Hi Sneaker thank you for get me clear that about the profile and level, and about stop asking I confused, I mean please don´t get me wrong but as much as I know the forum is for that? I mean, for ask, for helping between ?
