About Bluray

Hi guys I have mi collection of Bluray movies that I like to have in MKV so I use MakeMKV for convert the Bluray to a MKV file

The thing is this MKV size is (depending of the movie of course) 28gb, 35gb, 42gb etc

I use Handbrake with CRF to reduce the size of the MKV file keeping the best quality possible so I can keep a copy of that movies on a hard disc

So far when I got an MKV movie previously maked from Bluray and the size is almost (or more than) 28gb I use Bd rebuilder for encoding to BD25 so I get a smaller size so then I use Handbrake for reduce the size

(Just in case I don´t use BD rebuilder because I don´t know why I get image and audio problems when I play it)

So, my question here is, all this I´m doing I mean, if the MKV from Bluray the size is as an example 42gb and I use directly Handbrake to reduce with CRF, I´ll obtain the same quality that can I have if I previously reencode with BD rebuilder to BD25 ?

All I need to know is if the MKV file is too big, if this file I directly encode with Handbrake with CRF, the final quality will be the same if I previously reencode first with BD rebuilder to BD25 for get the file some smaller? it matters?

You would need to use the same settings in both programs. BD rebuilder is also using x264, similar to Handbrake, so they will be the same quality at the same settings. They might be using different versions of x264 which would could cause very minor differences but x264 is very mature now.

However, CRF is unlikely to give you the exact size you need to fill the BD so BD rebuilder could improve quality by using two pass and targeting a larger size. If the end result of your Handbrake encode is 20GB but BD rebuilder's was 24GB BD rebuilder would be better quality, again assuming the same preset and tuning was used.

Thank you Asmodian I need to ask you something, I notice the MKV files with mediainfo says High@4.1 , in Handbrake encoder profile so far I use 4.1 but not high, I use Main, is there any difference between Main and High?

I notice with one MKV movie that I convert with High and Main and hight get me a file size 1gb more than Main, I just don´t undestand witch one is better?

High profile is better. The difference between main and high is not big but almost all devices that support HD H.264 support high profile.

Main Profile (MP, 77)
This profile is used for standard-definition digital TV broadcasts that use the MPEG-4 format as defined in the DVB standard.[38] It is not, however, used for high-definition television broadcasts, as the importance of this profile faded when the High Profile was developed in 2004 for that application.
High Profile (HiP, 100)
The primary profile for broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for high-definition television applications (for example, this is the profile adopted by the Blu-ray Disc storage format and the DVB HDTV broadcast service).

At the same file size, High will look better than Main, as High has all the tools Main has, plus 8x8 blocks and (very broad handwave) more flexible quantization.

Using the same CRF might give different output sizes, which would indicate you can use a higher CRF with High than Main for your content.
