View Full Version : Filter for this BBC video artifact I see a lot?

On older videos from the BBC archives, there is a very heavy dotcrawl that affects the entire image. It's way more conspicuous than what you get with US programming from the same time period.

I first came into contact with this phenomenon when I purchased the bluray version of Ken Russel's View of The Planets (https://www.amazon.com/Ken-Russells-View-Planets-Blu-ray/dp/B01BMPJ3ZO). To my disappointment, it was not a HD transfer of the film, but instead a HD transfer of the analog archive of the film, and it included the dotcrawl phenomenon illustrated above, pervading everything.
Seems to me that this is a big enough issue that someone may have developed a filter for it. The problem is that it's a dynamic artifact. You can see from my second screenshot that it doesn't necessarily affect the entire screen at all times. Just certain areas, and dictated by conditions I haven't pinned down.
Thought I'd see if anyone has some insight.

It would be better if you made available some actual video. 10 seconds or so of untouched video.

That artifact is almost officially called dot crawl (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dot_crawl) and its colleague in crime, rainbowing. I don't know what the status for filtering that is nowadays, but using these keywords should help you browse for a solution.
10+ years ago, smoothuv then TComb were solutions.

With this type of full-frame pervasive dotcrawl you might want to try QTGMC in progressive mode to add small amount of temporal smoothing. It'll likely eliminate the dot crawl artifacts, but at the cost of adding a small amount of frame blending.

I've used QTGMC before, strictly to deinterlace. Actually I had it in mind to use it again on videos like these, after I've managed to eliminate the dotcrawl. I can't say I've seen it eliminate artifacts since I don't think that's what it's meant to do, but then again I use "Very Slow" because anything above that causes the deinterlacing to be imperfect. The idea is to kill those dots, and then deinterlace to generate 60fps, and then (possibly) work that result down to 24fps since the footage in these cases is invariably film.
Edit: Yep. All QTGMC did was a very good job of deinterlacing the video. The dotcrawl was kept faithfully intact. ;p
