No, I can't predict the future. But the fact those companies are letting Google build its services and products on what they claim is treasured intellectual property without doing anything about it for several years tells you a lot about how BS the claims are.

We've been here before with Microsoft claiming the Linux kernel infringes on Microsoft patents, without ever taking action against Linux, despite Linux eating their lunch in the server space.

Personally, I am an "I'll believe it when I see it" kind of person, so I will admit Sisvel's patent pools have any relevance to the VP9 and AV1 standards when I see a single successful patent lawsuit.

Anyway, including all the "Family members" patents, there are not many changes between the active patents of the "15th Jan" and the "11th April" versions: 5 patents removed and 7 added. The 7 pages difference is likely due to page formatting issues (bigger font size or similar).

After years of various patent holders complaining that companies using AV1 are allegedly infringing on their patents (while doing nothing about it for some reason), some company is asserting its perceived patent rights against AV1 where it matters: in court (not in blog posts or YouTube videos like Sisvel is doing).

So, let's see how it goes.

I find it weird that they are going after Snap and not Google (the biggest user of AV1), but anyway, Snap is a reasonably big company, they can afford lawyers.

VP9 and AV1 would happen anyway, since the various HEVC patent holders didn't agree to waive royalties for free-to-view video streaming (which made it unsuitable for the business model of services like YouTube and Twitch), and Google knew that would happen. VP9 was a thing long before the whole HEVC patent mess happened. H.264 is the exception, not the rule, MPEG-4 Visual also failed for free-to-view video streaming because patent holders also didn't waive royalties (and VP6 and VP7 in FLV files were used instead, with some WMV on some websites). And let's not forget that Google was threatening to remove H.264 decoding from Chrome entirely and go VP8-only until they got an indefinite waiver of royalties for free-to-view streaming from all H.264 patent holders. This is how important that waiver is.

The real problem caused by the HEVC patent mess is that even pay-to-view video streaming services decided to stay away from VVC (even on devices that support it) and either stayed on HEVC or went to AV1 plus HEVC (for old devices that don't support AV1), which translates to loss of royalties for patent holders. Another issue caused by the HEVC patent mess is that some PCs manufactured today ship with HEVC decoding disabled for royalty reasons, but with AV1 decoding enabled, which erodes the status of HEVC as the lowest common denominator for HDR and 4K content.

In other words, patent holders knew they would lose YouTube anyway (again, H.264 is the exception, not the rule), but they didn't expect to lose pay-to-view video streaming services to AV1 (which is what the patent mess of HEVC caused). Couldn't have happened to nicer people /s
