I did a search for this in the VirtualDub forum but found nothing and also it is not in the help. What the “preload xxx ms of audio before video starts” option is about and why it is by default 500. Thanks!

that the encoder writes the first half second of audio at the begin of the avi
and this give smoother playing

dont use this if u r going to encode a vid that will be appended to another

I’m not sure if I understand correctly. Is it like a delay? Does it add silence or the audio itself? If it adds the audio itself, why shouldn’t I use it if I append? Because I actually did append several files made in virtualdub and got lipsync problems. I had to use avisynth to append them correctly with audio. Also if I make intermediate avi files for MPEG-2 encoding, can I set it always to 0?

no, it is not a delay,it is a playing thing,
player loads half seconds of audio before starting to reproduce the movie,
and you dont need this if producing an intermediate file, specially if you have to append it AFTER another. it regards the BEGIN of playng.

i am not sure if the encoders writes these 500ms at the begin of the avi,
or just writes some instruction for the player....

or post to audio encoding forum, to our audio expert Aka....
