Has anybody ever received an inaccurate DELAY value when using DVD2AVI?

This has never happened to me before...

I have been unable to get the audio in sync with the video; I have tried everything I can think of:

1. Redid the project-same DELAY value
2. Used DELAY value as offset value when muxing XviD and .ac3
3. headac3he->ssrc->compensate .wav w/ DVD2AVI->lame

I remember reading something about SmartRipper2.41-which is what I used-causing async rips (although I don't remember where, to verify). I have scoured the forums looking for someone with a similar experience; I found none...

I appreciate any (and all) assistance with this matter...

FWIW, it seems to be often wrong with my processed HDTV captures. I've never figured out why, or what to do about it. I have just put on sound using trial and error. It's real pain.

I was afraid of that...

Doing it by hand sucks. I've been screwing with this thing for a week. Out of curiosity, with what increments do you test the audio offset (I am hoping for a majic method that I have overlooked)?

On my stuff at least the duration seems fine but the offset is sometimes random. And the problem is probably worse for me because I don't have any talent for adjusting lip sync.

So I play with first 500 ms increments, then 250, etc. Somewhere about the best 50 I stop. I don't do this often because it's such a pain and there are a few things I never even completed because of this. I just saved the data and figured I'd fix it later somehow.

I know little about audio programming, I'm a video guy. So I keep hoping someone else will come up with a good automatic solution.

But again, my own problems are probably being compounded by something that happens during the HDTV/ATSC demux process.

Just to let u know ur not alone :( - this has just happened to me when i'm trying to backup my copy of rush hour. DVD2AVI gave a delay of -1019ms but it's at least a couple of seconds out i would guess. I'm gonna try that "ac3 delay remover" ( cant remember the apps name ) that ppl use for ogg mixing to try and synch it, else it's the manual method as per the guides im afraid...

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem ? It's a first for me as well.

Let me see if I got this: You decoded the audio with DVD2AVI to .wav-output, then converted it to MP3, finally muxed the audio with VDub and entered the delay you saw in SmartRipper in DVD2AVI?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, just want to make sure whether you perhaps made a simple mistake.

Yeah, basically that is it.

DVD2AVI->ac3->headac3he->SSRC->DVD2AVI (compensate delay)->toolame
DVD2AVI->ac3->mux with XviD in nandub (where I entered the delay value in the audio offset options...

I also used the same .d2v to decode a wav-same delay value, and then to mp3 via lame; same async problem...

I will fix it manually (which is a giant pain in the a$$).

Actually bouncing around I saw a ac3 sync tool for download, but the download links I found were not working (not doom9's site). I wonder what that is all about. If I get my hands on the tool, I will check it out.

My method was:

1) rip dvd using vStrip
2) use dvd2avi to demux the ac3 from vobs
3) ac3 -> wav using azid
4) normalise
5) wav -> mp3 using lame
4) mux with nandub using the delay dvd2avi gave me in the ac3 filename.

This method has worked for me many times before, i dont get it... i havent got onto the ac3 delay app yet ( got it, aint tried it ) - ill let you know tomorrow if it works.

How about using DVD2AVI the whole way for sound? You don't loose much, really, it has got a VERY good decoder. Plus it automatically takes care of the delay.

That's the part I don't get-I've done this successfully so many times; this is the first time I've had this problem-either with SVCDs or avi/ac3...

I'll try doing the audio all the way with DVD2AVI; we'll see what happens...

hey, if anyone cares, im still yet to do the ac3 delay fix yet for the ac3 from rush hour - playing rallymasters ( still the most accurate rally sim imo :) ) and me damn machine froze ... shucks! ill post wether this fixes the prob tho a bit later when i finish encoding.
