R.I.P. mplayer / mencoder

From time to time, something changes deep inside ffmpeg which makes it incompatible to embedding it into mplayer and mencoder.

It's already 4 weeks ago that I reported an issue with "blocker" severity to the mplayer trac (https://trac.mplayerhq.hu/ticket/2350).

Nobody cares anymore... :(

Well, "mplayer" is not just the name of a player, but also the name of the whole project providing the mencoder software too.

And mencoder has a slightly different CLI syntax, compared to ffmpeg, which makes some specific issues easier to handle – at least for my taste. As long as it lasts...

GCC 8.x doesn't compile itself successfully in MinGW32, I believe ... unsolved issues for months already.

No-one should be using mingw32 anymore. Use mingw-w64, it also works in 32-bit just fine, and isn't years out of date. And GCC 8.3 compiles just fine with that in 32-bit, I know because I did that. :)

I will guess what LigH was trying to say is that MSYS2 didn't provide GCC 8.x for mingw-w64-i686 because of some build issues.

I don't know if this is still true since I never bothered to build a 32-bit toolchain.

So, would you be able to "fix" the media-autobuild_suite accordingly? I am absolutely sure I can't. And I guess wiiaboo may appreciate contributors. But he might have reasons to prefer native compilation over cross-platform tool chains. I don't know for sure. I only know that I am unable to adapt my custom build scripts on my own, with all my lack of knowledge.

P.S.: I may not even be able to tell apart all the MSYS2 compilation paths reliably.

Thanks for the info. Fortunately I have always enabled C and C++ only for my GCC releases, so I would never know that the 32-bit compilation problem existed in the GCC 8 series :-/

Regarding MABS — I really cannot help LigH with that, specially regarding the implications in the automated process(es)... I switched to MSYS2 from MSYS1 many moons ago, and I soon learned to NOT let pacman download or/and install GCC from the MSYS2 sources. I really don't know whether MABS can be configured (easily, or at-all) to skip the GCC setup step and just copy from the localhost a pre-compiled GCC package :confused:

Yeah I exclusively build for C/C++ as well, never needed any other language, so why complicate my life. :)
But I don't use MABS, since I like actual control over what I build - and know how to actually get that. ;)

It is a difference between "Zeranoe-like" in previous builds and "as much as works under GPL3" in this one... probably a lot of libraries hardly anyone would ever use.

Is anyone able to explain why mplayer supports the "avs" (AviSynth) demuxer when built for Win32, but not for Win64?

It seems not to be related to the configuration phase. For both builds, CONFIG_AVISYNTH_DEMUXER appears to be disabled in config.mak and config.h, so I have to guess it is somehow explicitly added for Win32 (but only Win32)?

According to comparisons between configure files, I believe that mplayer only implements loading of Win32 DLLs (e.g. as codecs), what a Win64 build does not support. But loading Win64 DLLs is not implemented at all.

It seems to have a few very distinct advantages over ffmpeg, so that e.g. Selur still supports it in Hybrid ... but maybe you only need to know how to motivate ffmpeg developers to implement "the rest".

I didn't realize it till recently, but looks like Vorbis is broken in builds > r38404.

instead of opening to 0:00, it /opens/ to 0.00, but timeline /shows/ (around) 2:36

jumping through the video is wrong
instead of short jump of 5.sec, jump is ~2:30
instead of long jump of 1.min, jump is ~4:00

back-jumps simply do not work
instead, jumping forward



tell-tale signs, audio (alone):

simply does not play any sound
instead "fast-forwards" though the file & exits
- whether the audio is ".webm" or ".ogg" doesn't matter, same behavior

I'll note that these builds do not handle (& I'll say it incorrectly) external subtitle (.srt) files that contain "unicode" characters in their name.

If you have:
- video.mp4
- video.srt
the subtitles display just fine.

But if you have:
- videö.mp4
- videö.srt
the ö character cause the display of the subtitles to fail (not display).



(Likewise, other builds, like https://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayer-win32/files/, do not have this issue.)
