View Full Version : Things to watch for to make good encode?

Hi. To see if an encode I've done is good, I've noticed that hair on people in the video is good to look at. If the hair is garbled up/blurry, then the encode is too bad.
Dark scenes are good to check too (maybe set --aq-mode 3 for a bit better dark scenes or set --zones to lower CRF a bit at those frames).

Are there other things to look out for to see if an encode is good?
I suppose some people would say grain, but I don't like too much grain.

EDIT: Thanks benwaggoner.

Temporal discontinuities like keyframe strobing or different detail retention between P & B frames
The edges of synthetic elements like sharp text: any ringing, blocking, or blurring
Same for sharp edges between areas of different color (4:2:0 subsampling can make things worse)
Does the background of the image still look good even when your eye is drawn to the foreground? Especially areas out of focus due to depth of field
