Resizing/Resolution Problem

I´m ripping and encoding a Video Clip from DVD to SVCD, but I´m stuck with a problem.

1) My source vid is a 720x480 4:3 NTSC. After I crop to take out some black lines from the left and right of the screen, and hit smartcrop all in GKnot it comes to 704X480 a perfect 4:3 resolution, ok so far so good.

2) Whem I run TMPGEnc and encode to a 2pass VBR SVCD, it resizes to SVCD resolution of 480x480 ok normal behavior, but obviously I lose my 4:3 aspect ratio ´cause it goes to a 1:1 aspect ratio and my image gets stretched vertically, going tall and thin.

So here´s my question how do I workaround this problem ??? :confused:

Easy - don't crop. Leave the original image 720x480. The TV's overscan should take care of the extra 16 lines on the sides, but the images should seem normal. Just make sure 4:3 is the DAR you selected for your SVCD video stream.

Do you get this wrong aspect ratio when playing back on your DVD player or before burning ? have you already tried to play it with your DVD player ?
Something strange in what you say... If I understand well, you have resized two times. It's not too good for quality, and for speed !

I get it in the preview and when I play it on my DVD. I´ll try not to crop and put the source image as 4:3 (as I do all the time BTW :D )
Let´s see if my problem disappears.

I think you should stay within the standard specifications for the image size. 480*480 should work, the problem is somewhere else.

Maybe the problem is in tmpeg. I don't use it but it looks like the problem is only the display aspect ratio. Before encoding, try looking in the video settings and set it to 4:3display.

One thing I forgot to say, do not crop. Your television never displays the whole pic. If you crop, you'll see less of the original picture.

I´m encoding the vid now lets see if I get it right this time. I´ve put the input vid settings as 4:3 and the output vid as full screen 4:3, I previewed the file and it still got stretched, but people say that´s normal, I´ll have to put it on the stand alone to see. As soon as I test it I´ll give you some feedback.

Yeah, of course it's going to look stretched it TMPGEnc - it's in 480x480!!! :) The only true test is playing it back on your TV. Just avoid cropping and you should be fine.

Another way to be sure of what you're doing is to use a mpeg2 reader codec. It will allow the media player to read your mpeg2 output files and will resize it like your standalone would.
