Potplayer & HEVC HDR 10bit

Can Potplayer (or MPC-HC) display HEVC HDR 10bit correctly on a normal 8bit PC monitor? Without the need of madvr?

Resources are there to be used and spent. What are you doing while watching HDR video that you need a lot of additional resources for? Any solution for HDR-SDR conversion would take some resources...actually, GPU usage is less in MadVR with HDR conversion than in EVR with no conversion...I get 10% CPU and 50% GPU, and that's a Core 2 Quad Q8200 with GT1030 2GB, you can't get much lower than that...your system should squash that like a fly

Also, for some reason, in Potplayer madvr shows "HDR, unknown properties" but in MPC-HC it shows "HDR 4000 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3"; both times it's the same file.

BTW: what does "DCI-P3" mean?

SHOULD it say DCI-P3 if it's a normal, non-HDR display?

I'm not sure but I think DCI-P3 is just an info about the color primaries of the grading monitor, not colorspace transform...what decoder filter are you using in pot player?

I'm sure you can control your fans from BIOS or software...

I already got something for fan control, that's not really an issue.

I just use the built-in decoders for everything (where possible).

The line "HDR 400 nits, BT.2020 -> DCI-P3" means madVR is getting all the HDR metadata properly and the file has a peak brightness of 400 nits and is encoded as BT.2020 with all colors within the DCI-P3 gamut (it should be displayed on DCI-P3 display for best results).

The line "HDR, unknown properties" means madVR is not getting all the HDR metadata properly.

because the potplayer devs didn't have the time to steal the code from lavfilter yet. they simply didn't add that feature.
