a player that players all video media flawless doesn't exist.
new media formats are created all the time and not all are support 100% correctly especially smaller rare used ones.
mpc-hc works fine for all common media types and doesn't need any setup to work like nearly all other player.
and i recommend you to have a look at the forum rules specifically rule 12.

I like Zoom Player the most myself. Its defaults are good but it also has more options then you can imagine, you really can just leave it at the defaults though.
It is well done to support weird files, streaming, etc.

MPC-BE or Zoom Player. VLC is good for what it does but... I don't think quality wise is on par with the best DirectShow based players. For instance it doesn't support madVR which is currently, AFAIK, the best video renderer available.

Zoom Player does a good job of walking you through the initial setup stuff, while most other players assume you know what you're doing. If you're just playing media files, the new Version 14 of Zoom Player Free should be all you need to get the benefits of LAV filters and madVR.
OTOH, VLC just works out of the box if you're not concerned with getting the best quality playback. Once you start using madVR, tweaking can become a full-time hobby if you're the type of person that strives for perfection (like me).
