View Full Version : DVD2SVCD: Erratic Playback

I recently converted Jurrasic Park III from DVD to SVCD using DVD2SVCD, after ripping with Smart Ripper. I burned the Bin/Cue files with Fireburner. The video on the resulting SVCD stalls intermittently with portions of the pictured garbled, when played on a stand-alone DVD player.

When I play the raw MPEG2 files created by DVD2SVCD on the computer, the motion is jerky.

In the following log file I noticed the line "Force Film activated!". I don't know what "force film" means, but the exclamation point concerns me.

I executed crash recovery after a momentary power outage.

Any ideas what went wrong?

There is tons of information on this site that will tell you if you need to use force film and why. Here is a test if you load up the vob files with dvd2avi and press "f5" then watch the Statistics window You'll see Video type, if it says Film or is more then 90% Film then force film should be used, If its not mostly film based then you might wanna go read the guides in this forum on how to encode and with the different types of video.

Is there a reason why you didnt use the internal ripper? I backed up jarassic park 3 but i used the internal ripper and it turned out fine.

Also make sure to read the Newbie guide and Q + A. In it you will notice that fireburner is not recomended for burning the bin files created by DVD2SVCD.

Also what are you using to play the files? Do not use Windows Media Player. Use a Software DVD program like WinDVD.

It is recomended that you always use the internal routines for ripping. There is a way to PIPE files ripped by SmartRipper. Do a quick search I don't have the time right now to explain it. It has been covered several times before.

It is also possible that you burned the bin files too fast. Slow the burn to 4X and try to play it again.

chainsaw135 and markrb, thanks for the replys.

The reason I used Smart Ripper is that the last movie I used DVD2SVCD's internal ripper, the audio and video were slightly out of sync. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I'm experimenting.

I played back the raw MPEG2 files using the ATI MMC 7.5 file player. The ATI DVD player won't play SVCD disks, so I didn't play the SVCD on the computer.

I'll try a 4X burn, but I'm skeptical considering the jerky playback of the raw MPEG2.

Well if your raw mpeg 2 file is jerky then its not because you burned at a higher speed...the fault is in your encode somewhere
If you could just for the heck of it, Use the internal ripper to ripp the vobs files you have already done, or if you have the disk handy re ripp with the internal ripper.

If you wanna re ripp using the already ripped vob files then just make a new directory where your newly ripped files will go, then go load the ifo file up and ripp with the internal ripper, make sure the files you are ripping are going in to a different directory then the original vobs tho:) THen delete the old vob files or copy the new ones in the directory which where you want them. Then re do the whole process, also if you could report back after thats done lets us know how it went.

Personally I think you're better off using Nero to burn images. The other thing you could try is encoding with a lower max av bitrate. By the way, have you tried the latest version of DVD2SVCD?

I burned the Bin/Cue files with CDRWin at 4X and the result is beautiful.

I previously ignored the advice to burn at 4X max, as SVCDs created with Flask/bbMPEG came out fine burned at 24X. I guess the files created by DVD2SVCD are more "delicate".

Thanks for the help
