How about we start a database of DVDs that we have ripped and post if we had any problems with them so others will know what to expect :)

I will go first with my most recent ones:

Snow white - no problem (used vstrip)

glass house - no problem

Goonies - (did widescreen version) no problem

"V" origional miniseries - (did widescreen version) no problem

road to eldorado- had to use CBR q& quality set to 5, 4pass vbr froze @ 34% and 1 pass vbr showed a lot of artifacts and froze a lot on cd 2

Girlfight - (did widescreen version) needed to use ITVC (took forever)

Please post what DVDS you had good/bad luck with and any tips/tricks you did to successful back them up :)

Adding another one to the list American Pie 2 (widescreen unrated) - no problem

Hello jasond,

always good to know that someone posts some new ideas to the forum. I wanted to reply earlier on this topic but I hadn't enough time to elaborate. :)

In general, I think it can be a good idea. But to get some benefit from it, I think we had to work this out just a little bit more. The way it could end up here in the forum might be something like the "Sticky: SVCD DVD Player List" but there are a lot more parameters, I think, that have influence on the success of a specific DVD conversion than those that are important for standalone DVD players to play SVCDs.

A first attempt should be to radically reduce the amount of datasets that go into that "database". This would be the easiest part as we should make it only a negative list - means, not to file all movie titles but only those that identify as "trouble-makers" because the huge amount of movie titles will convert with no problems so that this will leave only e few "no-goes" to take care about.

Well, secondly, we should use a specific form someone has to fill out to make an entry in that "database" so that we only have comparable datasets. In my opinion that would be necessary because of the many parameters that influence the encoding process - so that nobody forgets to provide essential information on that. Indeed, I guess, that would not be too difficult either and should read something like this (would also make it easier to use the search function of the forum to find a specific title):

- DVD title: Shrek
- PAL/NTSC: PAL
- ...

The difficult part of it, is the criteria we have to use to decide wether a specific title will go into the "database" or not. Because there are DVDs that don't work for one person with specific settings and another one converts it just fine with no problems at all. One criterion could be something like: The title goes into the database if there are at least 5 confirmed "no-goes", I think. But that leads me to another point - how to decide if those "confirmed no-goes" are really comparable? - This could be only achieved if we say: The main prerequisite has to be the default settings of dvd2svcd. Only if a DVD can not be converted with these default settings, then this title qualifies as an "database" entry - but only after at least 5 or so confirmed "no-goes" with these settings.

So, that were my reflections on that topic - next one please. ;)

Greetings,
Gerti

sounds like a great idea Gerti67, It would make it a lot easier for everyone here if we knew offhand if special things should be used (like vstrip, etc)
