View Full Version : h264/mkv prob following Creators Update

When I backup blu-rays, I use eac3to to extract h264 then MKVToolnix to wrap that into an MKV.
Prior to Windows 10 Creators Update (Win10 v1703, x64) these MKVs would play and seek quite normally albeit without audio.
However since the update, the MKVs still play OK but when I seek, often a huge video disruption occurs for a split second, then play resumes normally.
Example:

Can anyone suggest what has happened here and how to overcome it?
TIA

The same player I've always used, Zoom Player 10 MAX

It can be anything, splitter, decoder, renderer, driver etc. You can overcome this like any other problem, replace things one by one until you find the exact cause.

Disable hardware acceleration or update your graphics driver.

That is what happens when you seek to a non-Iframe. It is usually dependent on the decoder used, by default this is LAV in Zoom Player. I would reinstall LAV (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191) and make sure that is what Zoom Player is using.
You have the same workflow I do, exactly, and I do not have this issue. I am using Windows 10 1703 (15063.483), Zoom Player MAX v13.7 build 1370, and LAV Video 0.70.2.

Yes, my windows is the same, but I am using Zoom Player 10.0 MAX. Latter has always worked well before Creators Update.
I upgraded from LAV Filter 0.69.0 to 0.70.2 x64/x86 with "Reset Settings" and default options but it did not fix the problem.
LAV video is being used by ZP10 to decode h264.

Which hardware decoding mode do you use? nev recommends DXVA2 copy back, Zoom Player probably allows you to change renderer like evr or madvr, you can also try if a non Direct Show player works, I like/use mpv.

Was using "LAV's setting" H/W decoding - setting to software decoding or using any of the other options did not fix.
Neither did using all available video renderers.
Problem doesn't occur with Windows Media Player 12 - what does that suggest?

Windows Media Player might use Media Foundation instead of DirectShow, it might not suggest a lot, it still could be anything like happens only with 32bit apps which today not many people might use (Zoom Player is 32bit only). Does it also happen with MPC 64bit?

Hmmm.. Found that if I enabled ZP's Smart Play (overrides Windows Decoder / Filter selection), the problem goes away.
A Black Box solution...
