I'm reencoding a DVD and am hoping for some tips to improve the image quality and reduce artifacts. The files will be played off my Plex server which would have to transcode the original MPEG2 to AVC anyway, so I figure I might as well try to reencode it manually and make the most of it. The disc is "Jesus of Montreal", a rather decent Canadian film by Denys Arcand that's never gotten a top-quality release and probably never will. I've got the 2006 PAL issue, which AFAIK is the best transfer available. The PAL part is not a problem - I've worked out how to restore the original frame rate and adjust the audio, subs, and chapters to match it. But it's still a messy transfer with noticeable noise and artifacts. (Link to clip below.) I'm not as fluent in encoding as I'd like, so after some reading here I went with a simple
QTGMC(InputType=1, EzDenoise=1.5)
gradfun3()
The results are decent (clip below), better to my eyes than the original. But I'm sure they could be improved. The night scenes are frequent, lengthy, and important to the film, and the shadows don't seem quite right to me yet. The daytime scenes seem better, with less distracting noise in the background. Any analysis or advice is appreciated - part of my problem is that I don't always know the correct vocabulary to describe an artifact or problem, and thus don't know what kind of filter to investigate. I picked QTGMC because I read it was a decent all-in-one solution and I already had it installed.
Here are dropbox links to the original clip and the results from the simple QTGMC processing. Please post back if these don't work right - I haven't posted clips here before. Thanks.
