The format of the source file could not be detected.

This happens with the Nikon D3200 and Sony AX53

Sorry I can't access without a google account (yes, I can survive without it).

Try http://www.sendspace.com/ or other free.

Better if the sample is the mp4 created by the camcorder to see if is a demux problem.
Maybe the WAV (little endian) is not converted properly from PCM inside (big endian).

EDIT:
if eac3to show: The format of the source file could not be detected.
the initial wav don't have a valid wav header (even with noise content the demux tool must create a valid header)

You can try rename the .wav to .pcm and

eac3to "C0034 ID2.pcm" "C0034 ID2.wav" -2 -16 -big -48000 -override

crumblebits,

It would be better if the original audio streams were still in their original .mp4 containers ;)

Seems a problem with StaxRip MP4Box demux.

Without problems with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i "D:\tmp\C0089.MP4" -map 0:1 -acodec pcm_s16le "D:\tmp\C0089.MP4_.wav"
...
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'D:\tmp\C0089.MP4':
Stream #0:0(und): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(tv, bt709/bt709/iec61966-2-4),...
Stream #0:1(und): Audio: pcm_s16be (twos / 0x736F7774), 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s (default)
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:1 -> #0:0 (pcm_s16be (native) -> pcm_s16le (native))
Output #0, wav, to 'D:\tmp\C0089.MP4_.wav':
Stream #0:0(und): Audio: pcm_s16le ([1][0][0][0] / 0x0001), 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s (default)
size= 469kB time=00:00:02.50 bitrate=1536.2kbits/s speed=73.6x

Detected input like pcm_s16be and converted to pcm_s16le with a correct wav header.

And:
ffmpeg -i "D:\tmp\Oh Jesus.MOV" -map 0:1 -acodec pcm_s16le "D:\tmp\Oh Jesus.MOV_.wav"
...
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'D:\tmp\Oh Jesus.MOV':
Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuvj420p(pc, smpte170m/bt709/bt470m),...
Stream #0:1(eng): Audio: pcm_s16le (sowt / 0x74776F73), 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s (default)
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:1 -> #0:0 (pcm_s16le (native) -> pcm_s16le (native))
Output #0, wav, to 'D:\tmp\Oh Jesus.MOV_.wav':
Stream #0:0(eng): Audio: pcm_s16le ([1][0][0][0] / 0x0001), 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s (default)
size= 469kB time=00:00:02.50 bitrate=1536.2kbits/s speed= 209x

Here the pcm was s16le already.

Both wav files are valid.
Of course you can recode to .m4a directly with:
ffmpeg -i "D:\tmp\C0089.MP4" -map 0:1 -c:a aac -q:a 0.35 "D:\tmp\C0089.MP4_.m4a"

Other method than work fine:

Remux MP4 or MOV to MKV with MkvToolnix.
Use eac3to to extract or recode the audio

crumblebits,

Out of interest what media players are struggling to 'read' your .mp4 and .mov files?

No media players are struggling to read the video files, it's the demuxed audio that just won't work with anything.

Well.... (as hinted by tebasuna51) If you mux the .mp4/.mov files into the .mkv container using MKVmergeGUI. You can then use gMKVextractGUI to de-mux the PCM audio streams to the .wav container.

Job done ;)

@crumblebits

It seems MP4Box generally cannot demux PCM so it's a missing feature instead of a bug. I check the MP4Box output now and if MediaInfo don't show a proper audio format I call the ffmpeg demuxing function, test build should be available soon.

That being said. I've always thought it odd that PCM audio is being used by some of these camera manufacturers in the first place :eek:

The latest build skips MP4Box and makes the necessary format change in ffmpeg, works fine now with your samples.

@tebasuna51

Thanks for the help.

You are welcome.

Yep, the ffmpeg -c:a copy parameter can work with Nikon D3200 sample because the pcm is already s16le.

But with the Sony FDR-AX53 sample ffmpeg can't write a wav file with pcm s16be and show the ERROR:

[wav @ 00000000028c67c0] pcm_s16be codec not supported in WAVE format

we need -c:a pcm_s16le
than work with both formats.
