Hi,I dont really know if anybody can really help me on this subject or not I have a toshiba multi-region sd210.I have been right through the forum and tried everything that I could find,I sorted out my out of synch sound but have not managed to sort out my picture quality I believe it is something to do with the bitrate but whatever settings I try it doesnt seem to make any difference I have tried multi-pas one pass as I say I have tried everything I have seen on the forum. The problem is the picture freezes, jumps or gets blocky looking bits in it in-between doing this the picture is brilliant.I was wondering if anybody else out there with the same machine has had this problem and managed to rectify it the films seem to play back perfect on my pc no matter what the setting.I have a p4 1.8ghz,512 ram and ricoh cdrw/dvd combined.I was even considering trying a vcd as opposed to svcd what do you think, even though I dont really want to do this as I really like the look and feel of dvd2svcd many thanks in advance and thanks for all help already received see ya later

Hello greg19,

I have also a Toshiba SD-210E (FW 1.40-2.10 R2 no multi-region) and all I can say is that the picture quality is superb with it. Only negative thing is the audio-sync-issue but if you mux with the right delays then the problem gets solved.

I think your problems are caused by some "bad" or "bad burned" CD-R(W) media because the Toshiba DVD drive is very picky about the media from my experience. When i use some brand (don't remeber which ones right now) of media i have the exact same issues you describe. Same with the quality of burning - it needs very good quality burns. I only have a MItsumi 4804TE at the moment and therefore can only burn at 4x speed and when using brands like Verbatim, Kodak or TDK with it I have no problems at all. When playing some SVCDs of a friend with his Ricoh burned at 16x speed (and sometimes 8x too) I also have issues with these brands. :(

The bitrate is no point with it as it plays up to 4500kb/sec but only with good media!

So try to burn at 4x speed (or even lower - depends on your burner) and use quality CD-R brands - for me the issues got away with it completely.

Greetings,
Gerti

Hello greg19,

i use "2" sec for Movie offset and "5" sec for CD overlap. When I first tried to solve the audio-async-issue I even tried to set Movie offset to "0" and there was no problem with it.

But I would not recommend this setting if you plan to play your SVCDs on other players because it can get really annoying if you realize they are out of sync because you did so. ;)

So just leave it at default setting - it will sure do no harm.

Greetings,
Gerti

How can you find out what bitrate your player can handle? Is that in the manual?

Hi No Rice,

it's usually not in the manual from my experience but a good site to find out a bit more about your player is http://www.vcdhelp.com/ - have a look at the DVD player compatibility list and search your model. Then have a look at the user comments - some are quite useful - some not.

You have to find out on your own who to trust as some posts are quite irritating. But there are allways good postings from experienced users telling you what they found out about the player.

Or you can try on your own - just use higher bitrates ignoring the SVCD standard and try with your standalone. If picture gets jerky or you see those ugly block artefacts you know that it can't handle this bitrate.

Hope that helps,
Gerti
