Hi everyone - I'm having issues ensuring compatibility of 4K, 60fps h.264 media on Panasonic and LG screens.

Files are generated using Handbrake on the high profile, medium preset, CRF20, constant frame-rate. Audio is at 160kbps AAC and muxed into MP4. Standard stuff. The same issue appears to occur using another GUI, eg MeGUI.

Samsung screens seem to handle everything, but LG and Panny screens only seem to be able to decode *some* of the encodes produced. They error out with 'file not supported'. Most work fine though. Files either play or they don't, there's no mid-playback crash or anything. Something is failing on the initial scan.

It's certainly not a bitrate issue as some files go move north of 90mbps and play back fine, while others in 20-30mbps territory can fail.

I'm not really sure how to go about pinpointing what the issue is. Any help, much appreciated.

Upload working and non-working samples or at the very least MediaInfo logs of them. Maybe someone will notice a pattern. Exact TV model numbers may also be helpful.

Stay <100Mbit (e.g. 75Mbit or 50 for safety), with realistic 3B frames, 4 ref, GOP at 3x fps and should you be fine. Don't let x264 creates it's "crazy" files with 16 ref frames etc.
Also use transport stream rather than mp4. I found it "better working". Include audio track even if silent as Samsung TVs show "audio not supported" when there is no audio track, which is annoying.

Definitely use VBV and set the proper level to limit reference frames..

4kp60 requires 5.2, so at least set vbv-maxrate and vbv-bufsize 300000.

TS may indeed be a safer container. I'd suggest using AC3 audio as well, but who knows :)

Honestly though, you'll be hard pressed to find a 4k tv that doesn't have an HEVC decoder. Given the enormous improvements of HEVC over AVC at 4k resolutions, why would you want to use AVC?

Yes, vbv-maxrate and vbv-bufsize can also help and I would rather set them lower than what profile allows.

Depend on SoC anything higher than HP@L4.2 may be not possible to be decoded by HW decoders - H.265 seem to be safer choice than H.264 for UHD content.
