In the past I downloaded successfully occasionally videos from YouTube with the Firefox AddOn VideoDownloadhelper.
This seems to work not more for VP9 encoded videos.
Some users recommend to install an additional converter.
I don't want to install such a converter!
How else can I download VP9 videos from Youtube?
I think there must be another tool (for Win7)
Thank you

Could it possibly be that YouTube videos are simply no longer available in that format because Google may have switched from VP9 back to H264 in light of that patent infringement lawsuit by Nokia. I haven't followed the story, so I don't know where it went. Maybe someone can chime in and correct me.
My preferred tool for downloading videos off of video sharing sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc. would be 4K Video Downloader (https://www.4kdownload.com/download).
It is donation supported, updated regularly, and can still download videos in 1080p or higher, which is where your browser plugin (while still very much part of my own tool set) falls short.
4KVD downloads the videos in H264 MP4 format without re-encoding. It does arbitrarily fail rarely, and, needless to say, you won't be able to download paid YouTube content with it, but it's still the best IMHO.
Other than that, I'm sure there are even some free online downloading services, where you paste the URL into a field and it lets you save the video file.
Sorry I don't have anything better. Hope you'll find the solution if there is one.

I use firefox + greasemonkey with the script youtube links (https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/5566-youtube-links), this combination lets you download the individual available streams for the video and is very posible that you ned to download audio and video separately and then mux them. The script modifies the youtube page with links for the streams.

I'm using this add-on/extension : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-video-and-audio-dow/?src=api
Adds a "download" button under the video, when you click on it an overlay is placed over the video showing ALL the video and audio options Youtube offers.
You can click on the video format you want and (if you configure it like this) it will automatically pick and download the best audio to match it and mux the 2 streams in a file on your computer.

They haven't switched from VP9 to H.264. They are still using both formats (to be compatible with as many client devices as possible).

youtube-dl has been around for ages and works perfectly. Lists all the formats available per video and you can take your pick.
I can even download the HDR VP9.2 files that way
