I have a library of smartphone videos at 1080p (iPhone 5-6s and various Samsungs) and I need to recode it for smallest size with nearly the same quality. The quality is low to begin with.
I tried CRF=24 and "Slow" and ended up with very small file sizes (6x reduction) and a slight decrease in quality, particularly on noisy or very detailed/textured scenes. Do I just bump it up to 23 and that's it? It seems that people say 23 is for TV-show-like quaity, which seems like a waste for smartphone videos, but 24 leaves a bit to be desired.
Also, same question for DSLR 1080p videos. Those are slightly better quality than broadcast TV, so I'm guessing CRF 22 or 21? Anything else to tweak?
I'm not looking to get too deep - would just appreciate if someone could tell me the settings to use. Thanks!
