Hey guys,
First off you are going to have to bare with me because i am not to computer literate, so this may come across simple to everyone on here. I have saved my HDD hard drives from my previous computers and wanted to get so data off of them. I brought a usb 2.0 to Sata for sale (http://www.canada.for-sale.com/2-port-usb-hub) at the local store, got home and i am clueless on how to use it. Obviously i have tried plugging it in but i am not getting anywhere. The computer is connecting but when i go to open the new drive it won't allow me and comes up with an error message.
I have searched online for an answer but not really found one that works yet, maybe this method don't work? My computer runs on Windows 10 with a core i5 processor and enough memory to hold just about anything. So what am i missing? do i need to download any software to make this possible or have i got a hardware issue? As i said above this might be a really simple fix but it is driving me crazy i will place a picture below of the cable i have.

Any advice/help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!!! It would be great to get back some of them files and memories!!
Thanks

That adapter (like the one pictured) is designed to work only with 2.5" hard drives, which only use 5v. Most of these cables don't have any electronics to create the 12v that regular old classic hard drives need for the motor, to spin the discs inside.
You should get a "docking station" or a "hard drive enclosure" , search Amazon or whatever stores you have near you using these terms. Pay attention and check that the product advertises compatibility with 3.5" hard drives.
Here's example of such products (just selected at a quick search on Amazon, may not be the best or most well reviewed) : docking station : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01E6I7V7Q?psc=1 , enclosure format: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00RCJ54BC?psc=1
They're usb 3.0 but they're backwards compatible with usb 2.0, so they'll work on your computer if you don't have usb 3.0 ports.

Wouldn't it work ok if you can source an additional power plug for the 3.5 inch drive ?
Perhaps there is a spare inside the computer case.
[Some hard drives only work with sata power plug, some with either sata power or standard power plug (Amphenol I think)].
You can also get a standard Amphenol to Sata converter. This looks about right to me:- https://www.aliexpress.com/item/25cm-10-Amphenol-Micro-SATA-16P-to-SATA-7P-Cable-with-Latch-4P-Power/32612653724.html?spm=2114.40010308.4.36.7l2KLi
EDIT: This is the one (or very similar) to what I use. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Molex-Power-Adapter/dp/B00STNUB04/ref=pd_lpo_147_tr_t_3/159-9710225-8687127?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3971T25CND1RVRVVBV8N
EDIT: On re-looking, is that pictured above not just a USB to sata power cable, you need sata data like the one in first link, on right hand side of image. (in above image the double USB plugs are just to supply sufficient power, a single USB connection is limited in how much power it can supply).
EDIT: Sata data cable. http://www.cablematic.co.uk/ref/DN05?gclid=CPDegIbQss8CFUco0wod_0cKoA
or here: http://www.ebuyer.com/123996-startech-serial-ata-drive-connection-cable-24-sata24?mkwid=s8aJNxOF1_dc&pcrid=51508046219&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=CML6tZrQss8CFUlmGwodS6QB1g
Or you could just get an external caddy (I presume that you are talking about 3.5 inch drives):- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/391476888259?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=27377119746&rlsatarget=aud-183534136866%3Apla-181479807186&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=9045908&device=c&campaignid=620794543&crdt=0
Agree with huhn below, add into your current system as internal if possible, if some extra then put in external caddies.
USB 2.0 is nowhere near as fast as native Sata 2.0/3.0.

what stops you from building the drive IN your PC?

I've had lots of external drive enclosures over the years, and several of them had two USB connectors, as shown in your picture. The only purpose of the 2nd connector (the one on the short cable) is to feed more power to the drive. It doesn't pass data - only power. Most drives don't even need the 2nd connector plugged in, if used lightly.
What brand and model number is your adapter shown in the first post, so we can find the specifications etc? What error message(s) do you get? Your USB ports may be under-powered. Have you tried different ports? How about different host PCs?

Right that's where i have gone wrong i mistaken the SATA power cable for a data cable, i need to order the cables from this link given by you guys https://www.aliexpress.com/item/25cm...08.4.36.7l2KLi. Before i do i am going to try another PC to see if it is just mine that doesn't agree with it??? Maybe it's windows 10 there has been a few things going wrong with it...(windows 7 is the way forward)

Your link dont seem to work proper, but looks as if was intended to be as first link in post #4, ie here:- https://www.aliexpress.com/item/25cm-10-Amphenol-Micro-SATA-16P-to-SATA-7P-Cable-with-Latch-4P-Power/32612653724.html?spm=2114.40010308.4.36.7l2KLi
