It is verified that High 10 Profile AVC is perfectly supported in iPhone 7 and 7p; However, HEVC is not.
Since iPhone 6, apple has included HEVC in iPhone, but only for facetime application. Its built-in player cannot recognize HEVC videos, nor do they allow 3rd party players to utilize the API.
Now, for iPhone 7, 10bit 4K decoding is available, only with AVC. Even the 8bit-HEVC is unplayable.
Seems the industry is not rushing to HEVC by any means.

By our own tests.
My friend has brought an iPhone 7, and tested its video playback functions.
He is resourceful in video codec knowledge so I take his conclusion highly reliable.

I think the iphone 6/6s removed hevc support from facetime with a firmware update. Apple clearly doesn't want to pay the crazy patent licensing costs.

How? With a third-party software player? How does he know ASIC is used? If ASIC is used how does he make sure it's not the 8 bit part decoding 10 bit (with artifacts in certain scenes)? I've seen that happen back in the day.

He tested the built-in player, as well as some third party player like AVPlayer, NPlayer...
the built-in player always uses hardware acceleration, and you can manually switch the mode in 3rd party ones.
It is confirmed that HW support is ready for 10bit-AVC with no visual artifacts. I trust him since he knows what he is doing, and he has definitely seen those artifacts previously with some android device. color-blocking, pink aberration...
However, no HEVC sample can be played with built-in player nor 3rd party ones forcing HW decode. They can only be played through SW mode.

Interesting info. I am not able to verify.
I see a player on google.

Plays 10-bit HEVC on your phone and tablets.

You can play HEVC with 3rd party players, but only with soft decode mode(which is very power consuming)

I'm not surprised at all :) They didn't even pay taxes in EU (Irish case). I'm glad they will have to pay huge fine for this ultra greedy behavior. Removal of mini-jack is just another joke :)

I'm pretty sure the fine won't stand up in court. Apple will likely get off with no fine or a greatly reduced fine.

Probably, but this is crazy. Same for youtube, google etc. They paid less taxes in the UK than tiny company which I work for. Sorry, but this nonsense has to stop.

at least google amazon etc paid 11%, something more than the apple's 0.005% on what they declare

And Apple pays plenty of Sales Tax ( VAT ) in selling iPhones and Mac, as well Store, employees, etc contributing to the economy. Where as Google is comparatively little. And no, Apple paid around 3%, Google paid around 6%. Amazon? No idea because they only recently started to make a profit.
This isn't to argue they are right or wrong. And they aren't the only one who are doing this, plenty if not every multinational are doing it, Because by law this is perfectly fine. ( As of now ). What we need is a Tax reform.
To stop this thread going into yet another debate I wont go on again with the tax code.

When you consider the cost of H.264 license is only $5M per year cap, compared to $65M for HEVC. It isn't hard to understand why they are against it. It is value proposition.
The industry are paying 10s billions every year into 4G patents, but we are also witnessing the fastest evolution in Mobile connection technology. Pushing LTE forward, and R&D into 4.9G or 5G, Constantly evolving.
Now compared to HEVC, a total of likely a billion every year, and if it was like h.264 that lasted around 10 years, the total add up 10B. Not to mention they have the option to hike up the price after x number of years. Why and What exactly, is HEVC worth 10 billion in its lifetime?
I am not against patent per se, but nowadays everyone seems to use it as weapon.
I think Apple will wait and see if AV1 is any good. If not they will sit and wait until something better comes up. From their prospective, they have no hurry into HEVC.

No Sales Tax as IVA is another pair of shoes, which each company pays, and the 0.005% is a real thing, agreed with ireland goverment against EU rules.
about the other post on h.264/hevc patents, Apple is one patents owner, and a MPEG LA member, so most likely they have to pay way less and get a lot from h.264/hevc licenses.

This is utter rubbish, just so that you know. Apple is not paying the VAT, the consumer is. That money would be spent elsewhere (says established economic science) and reach the tax chest anyway.
Every goods contributes to VAT income courtesy of being sold, it doesn't make its producer better. And fact is that Apple dodges taxes and classifying it as a freeloader in the economy is completely justified. You can compare it to other corps. For example Intel's tax rate is on a completely different scale. And yet VAT is still paid by consumers of its prouducts.
