i have an 85 minute movie to put onto 2 700meg cds....so with 256kbit/s mp3 vbr audio i can get over 2000kbit/s for the video. i was wondering what would be good settings for such a high bitrate. i encoded the film at 672*368 for perfect aspect ratio, sharp bicubic and low noise filter, there were 0.321 bits/pixel and it generally looked excellent as you would expect, but occasionally there was some pixellation, like tiny macroblocks, almost as if the contrast was very high, i haven't noticed this with other movies and i attributed this to the abnormally high bitrate.

so....any suggestions for encoding this film?

I don't really know what to say. There are no special settings for high bitrates, and the macroblocks are certainly not caused by too high a bitrate. Now 672*368 is a huge resolution, so you might want to:

a) reduce it
b) use neutral bicubic. It generally introduces less ringing in sharp areas, which might be causing some of your artifacts.

Either way, that resolution and 256 kbps sounds like awful overkill, but it's your choice.

hehe..... u could encode audio at 320 cbr and really overkill it :)

i increased the resolution to 704*384 and it looks fine now : i thought about putting it on neutral bicubic but there's no longer any of the contrast problems.

256 is sorta overkill for the audio but with a high bitrate it makes so little difference increasing the video by 30kbit/s or so.

also note that 368 isnt divisible for 32.

 try one thing....put audio at 192vbr,
supercompress credits,
and try the 800x416 res.......

Hi-

also note that 368 isnt divisible for 32.

I don't believe it has to be for the vertical resolution. 16 is OK, and even 8 in most cases.
