Netflix compared 5,000 clips from 500 titles in its library using the x264, x265, and libvpx codecs. x265's implementation of HEVC was the clear winner on quality and efficiency, but whether that matters in light of compatibility and licensing issues isn't so obvious.

a few months back i did a large test myself and came up with 12%

there is no question in my mind that HEVC is better than VP9, but 20% seems high to me.

Despite HEVC having the edge I think its great new hardware like the S905x are made to handle VP9, without HEVC getting its heals nipped occasionally by competition companies like Advanced HEVC are likely to come out of the woodwork again with ridiculous (technology killing) licencing structures.
