Hi to all,
I use my htpc (gtx 970)to send an high quality UHD signal to my pj (Epson eh-ls10000).

My screen is in 21:9 format.

With the nvidia control panel I can create a uhd 21:9 resolution (3840x1645 pixels if I remember well) and it's perfect but I suppose that Madvr can outs only 16:9 resolutions (3840x2160) when he menage Blu ray films... I'm wrong?

Infact if I see a film like avatar I see portions of the image goes outside of my screen.

So, if madvr can't menage 21:9 resolutions, I need some king of masking of cropping feature in Mpc hc....

There are some feature like this?

Thank you so much.

there is a crop feature in madVR. you can find it in zoom control.

Thank you so much. This evening I'll do a try...

There is also the possibility to move up and down the visible image in this cropped area?

Not really, you can only place it at the top or bottom.

Hi Guys,
Into the "zoom" menu there are only settings to menage black bars coded into the film.

My intent is to crop away some portion of a full frame film (like Avatar for example).

Is it possible to cut some portion of a full frame film to obtain a 21:9 area?

Thank you

you can use mpc-hc with video frame -> touch window from outside.

a not that good idea i have to say but do as you pleases.

Hi Huhn,
I've tried it but it's not usable.
Touch window from outside can crop a 16:9 frame without losing the right proportion but the elements of Mpc hc window remains visible...

Instead I need this kind of cropping in full field exclusive mode.

In this way I can target perfectly my 21:9 projection screen without any visible element out of the border of my screen.

In the projection area 21:9 screens are very diffuse and I imagine that this kind of implementation will be usefull for those who use madvr with a projector that do not have the masking function on the pj.

In madVR settings go to devices > Epson eh-ls10000 and set it to "Digital Projector". A new "screen config" settings page will appear under this device, where you can crop the display area.
If you want to crop 16:9 content to 21:9 then you'll also need to set the "if there are big black bars" option in zoom control to "zoom the bars away completely".

Good comments from all the users here. Just a couple comments from me:

1) Don't try to create a custom 21:9 resolution. Instead use a resolution that matches the physical resolution of your projector's LCD/LCOS panels.
2) Tell madVR exactly the size of your projection screen (see MokrySedeS' reply). E.g. for a 1080p projector it would make sense to set top & bottom masking borders to 140 each, which would reduce the active projection area to 1920x800. Or if you want to shift the projection up/down slightly, e.g. set top to 120 and bottom to 160, or something like that.
3) In the madVR "zoom control" settings, enable black bar detection and configure the other options to match your preference.

This way madVR will intelligently analyze every movie aspect ratio (regardless of whether there are black bars encoded into the image or not), and zoom (or not zoom) and reposition each movie exactly the way you need it. E.g. if you don't ever want to see any black bars, activate the option "if there are big black bars: zoom the bars away completely". Doing so will cut away some image content, so I'd not really recommend that, but it's your choice, of course.

Hi Guys,
Is it normal that the cropping feature (on a 2160p image) produce +5ms in rendering times??

Cropping can cost one additional rendering step, which may increase rendering times slightly (but I would expect less than 5ms hit, unless you have a VERY old and slow GPU). On the other hand, true cropping (do you have the option "crop black bars" checked?) should reduce the number of pixels madVR has to run shaders on, so that should actually reduce the rendering times.

Hi Guys,
Today I've performed some other tests...

Strangely when I use "define visible area by cropping masked bars" (only top and bottom) I see that the image is compressed. Not good proportions.

After some minutes I discovered that I've to check :
Video window > resize window by inside
In Mpc hc.

Now I've the crop and good proportions like yesterday.

Test was done on avatar that has no black bars.

Anyway my rendering times increased 36ms to 100ms!!!

I remember to you that I work outputting a 2160p image.
My graphic card is an nvidia gtx 970 over clocked and liquid cooled.

Is it normal an increase like this??

I can only imagine that different scaling algorithms become active. Please activate the OSD (Ctrl+J) and make screenshots (PrintScreen key) from both 36ms and 100ms situations. You may have to disable the automatic fullscreen exclusive mode, otherwise making screenshots might not work. Please upload those screenshots to some image host website and post the link here.
