was wondering, if i convert a divx movie to the svcd format, will i be able to play it in my standalone dvd player? If so, does i just put the file on a cd or is there a certain way you have to burn the movie in order to make it possible to play it on a standalone ... and last but not least will i loose alot of quality?

sure.. if you burn it right and your dvd player can play svcd

uhm.. you need to use a svcd authoring program like tsvc OR.. just use nero burning program and use the SVCD template

and last but not least will i loose alot of quality?

well.. youll likely use some quality.. svcd is good but still a bit lossy... all in all you'll be ok.. just keep the bitrate decent (avg in the 1700 area) and use multipass (at least 3) from Cinema craft encoder or tmpgenc (cq vbr @ 1700 max) and a temporal smoother wouldnt hurt
