There seems to be many problems with VBR-MP3. Even the VirtualDub homepage focuses on this problem (http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_news12/02/2001 How seeking in AVI really works, a.k.a. why your sync is off). The conclusion of virtual dub is, that VBR-MP3 files can be played with Direct-Show but the files are useless for editing. And you will have a lot of sync problems with the avi.
Should I use VBR-MP3 or should I change back to CBR?

let me answer with a question: does it work for you? If yes there's no reason for CBR, if no, the answer is also obvious. And as far as the editing goes I write a nice guide on how to use AVIs with VBR MP3 in other programs.. (DivX -> (S)VCD Guide)

Or you drop AVI and switch to Ogg format : http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16945 .
