Help! I can't remove AVI filez under winXP

I can't remove ANY AVI filez under windows XP i tryed everything.. i even wen't to the microsoft support site..( yhea like that was going to help !).. Even under the command promp in safe mode i can't remove avi filez that stupid xp keeps saying this file is in use by a person or a program.. yhea NOT... it's just xp ..
Does annyone have suggestions 4this problem? i'm getting pretty sick of this and my harddiskspace isn't getting any larger this wat..

This may sound stupid and strange, but had this problem couple of days ago and all I did was just disabling the WinampAgent (runs in background - you have to pop-up the task manager) and everything was fine... Strange....Very strange....

Yea, this happens to me sometimes too. Usually I boot up in DOS mode using a boot disk and delete that file. I can't move/delete it even in Safe Mode. Strange.

Uhm winamp agent is alway's disabled here and going to dos isn't going to work for me cous i'm on ntfs but i do heared that it has something to do with the divx codec? cous it registeres the avi extension and Micro$oft won't let you delete the avi file then...
But this is stupid.. alot of ppl are having this problem with xp and no one has a solution 4it.

Hi,

The way to solve this is to wait a little after clicking the file.

In Windows Explorer, make sure you have the status bar enabled. Then after clicking on the file you want, make sure both the right and the left of the status bar display information about the file.

Then you should be able to rename, move, or delete the file at will. The program using it is windows explorer, scanning the file.

Let me know if this works, it does for me. I'm running WinXP Professional.

I don't (won't) run XP and I'm afraid I don't remember the details of this at all, so I was hoping someone else would answer this. But I seem to recall this has something to do with preview mode while windows gathers info about the file. There is some way to turn this off if you search a bit.

Sorry, all I can remember. I guess I'm a lot of help. ;)

Nope that isn't working either.. think i'm going to try to find that 'previeuw' mode somewhere in xp and try to turn in off.

trbarry is right. I had this issue in WInXP awhile back and found a registry fix on the web to disable the preview mode. Do a search on Google for XP registry tweaks.

Also make sure you don't have MediaXW installed.

welp i found a fix for it.... so.. here it is for everyone who had the same problem ..

The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll. This problem manifests itself by causing Explorer to read the entire contents of an AVI file, regarless of its size or location any time the mouse pointer is hovered over it, or an attempt is made to access it in windows explorer. This causes 'permission denied' errors when trying to simply move, copy or delete these files as they cannot be changed while Explorer has an open handle on them. This also causes a DoS situation where large AVI's are stored on remote shares and Explorer keeps reading the files from beginning to end each time they are accessed. To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32 This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. This will not effect your ability to play files, get file attributes, or even view thumbnails.

Just restart and you can simpel delete rename the avi filez..

Just another me-three post.. I installed XP on my pop's laptop (cuz it's really my bro's laptop and he's a MS fanboi) and ran into the same thing. Funny, even after a power-off shutdown and restart, the thing still wouldn't delete! Anyway I waited for like an hour later and then it vent. Hah, and to top the whole thing off, the damn thing is spyware.

Man, I hated the XP interface. Everything was so much harder to use. Even when I switched back to the so-called "classic" (yeah, as if) look, I still ran into problems with even basic things. As Da Big Guy is my witness, if I ever put XP on my main box, it'll be because B. Gates is shafting me up the butt with his hardware support. Rant rant rant..

Speaking of MS hardware, if any ya is pals with a MS bloke, they're selling X-box games fer $10 a pop in their company store--not that there's anything good anyway other than Oni.
