Hi,
I am a complete noob about these video editing and stuffs, but I do record a lot of my gameplay videos, via Shadow Play and then upload them to Youtube. Now the problem is with the size of these recordings, they are pretty big. I previously used either Fraps or DXTory to record game play videos, and then use Handbrake to turn the size down (simply dragging that metre down to 22 or 23 or something), which helped me, but with Shadow Play the size isn't reducing in that big margin. I read that Shadow Play recordings are already encoded (unlike Fraps and all), so further encoding doesn't help here to reduce its size. So what is my option here? I have terrible upload speed, so a video around 500-800 megs would be my ideal size for uploading to Youtube. I am looking for a simply app like Handbrake. I have heard new x265 codec helps here, is that right?
Another query, I used to use Virtual Dub to cut my recordings, but that thing doesn't work any more for the MP4 files, is there any other app like that, which will just let me cut/join videos without any encoding, like direct steam option of VDub?
Thanks in advance.
PS: I am not sure whether this topic in the right section or not, so kindly move it if needed.

since you mentioned FRAPS, I'm guessing that you're talking about computer games rather than console games...?

a. You could type something like:
20 mbps * 5 minutes in megaBytes
into google and start from there (Either adjust your video length or shadowplay bitrate (http://i.imgur.com/JaLr0AX.jpg) or both).
example: At 50 mbps you have 2 minutes to hit 750 megabytes.
b. If quality suffers too much, record with higher bitrate and then re-encode (maybe scaledown, maybe reduce fps) with some better codec (x264), before uploading.

Yes, I am talking about computer games, absolutely.
I know that I need to re-encode, and that's what I was asking, is there any better app than Handbrake? To retain the quality as much as possible and reduce the size further?

1) lower resolution (fine detail does not compress well)
2) try to avoid moving the "camera" (fast motion does not compress well)
3) try lower ShadowPlay quality settings..?
4) keep dragging that Handbrake quality slider down...

Yes, more or less: XMedia Recode. Here's a tutorial I worked up:

Also, look into Open Broadcaster as an alternative ... free, open source, fine control of encoder (x264) settings, *it works*, and there are lots of plugins for overlays and such.

I've never touched Handbrake or Shadow Play so I have no idea how either of them work, what they do, or what they let you do, but generally speaking, you don't want to recompress video that has already been compressed once, even if you have the option. I would just record everything in FRAPS and feed it directly into Virtualdub, using XviD to compress the video. This gives you maximum control over size and quality.

I just made my first 60fps encode from natively 60i content run through the Bob() filter.
The results are VERY PRETTY.
This is definitely how I'm doing the rest of my encodes for Andromeda, Batman Beyond, Birds of Prey, Carmen Sandiego, ER, and all those other shows that hello_hello thinks don't exist.
These DVDs you own Katie, the ones I assume contain never before compressed video, are they a special sort of DVD?

Don't tell Katie nobody uses Xvid any more. The shock might be too much.
There must be definitions for "maximum", "control", "size" and "quality" I'm yet to learn.
The OP knows enough to ask about x265 while Katie knows enough to still be recommending Xvid. That seems to say it all....

I wasn't following her around looking for excuses to belittle her. I think I've posted in four Katie Boundary threads. The thread where she's the resident DVD expert (where I've probably made the most effort to treat her like she's a grown up), another where she lied about me so I posted to defend myself, the thread where she asked about the forum ignore function and mentioned me by name, and this one, which I happened to simply look at and where she was giving silly advice.
She's referred to me in at least two threads where I wasn't even participating, and by the time I posted here Katie had advertised her activation of the forum ignore function (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1765111#post1765111) and I had no reason to believe she'd see my reply..... so honestly, I hope you might understand why I find a public accusation of "following her around" a little offensive.

I've already taken a more scorched-earth strategy to thread-derailment. I'm not expecting any further success from those who feel like starting flame wars in every thread where they see my name.

I don't, and even when posting your 'defense', you couldn't resist insulting her some more. Just read some of the other posts in other threads where others disagree with her but do so politely (often ... or usually ... or sometimes) without getting down in the dirt and without personal attacks. We will not have a repeat of your long-running feud with ... I forget his name.
Some people just rub others the wrong way. Inconsonant personalities, or something. Apparently seeing her name is like waving a red flag in front of a bull for you. You've already done more than enough to warrant strikes and even being banned here. I don't like to hand out strikes but for you, if necessary, I'll make an exception. You've been warned.

Can we get back to talking about video games?
