After ripping a DVD to my hard drive, I can burn it on DVD without any problems (Using Instant CD+). The DVD works fine in the Pioneer DVD burner when playing back but I cannot get it to play back on my DVD rom or on my standalone home DVD player. I have tried different media (including Pioneer DVD-R discs) but the problems still evident.

Have a look here.
When burning use NERO and select UDF/ISO. make sure all the files are in a folder called VIDEO_TS and it is in the root of the compilation

Frustrating isnt the word, i have the same problem - what i know does work...
DVD decrypt or smartrip the whole VIDEO_TS and put back onto a DVD-R with instant VOB.
If you have to hack out to reduce files:
1)Leave all VIDEO_* intact
2)Leave all VTS_0*.BUP & IFO's intact.
3)Leave all VTS_0*_0 intact.
4) Hack out any VTS_0*_1, VTS_0*_2 etc that are not needed for the main movie.
5) Use ifoedit to 'get vts sectors' & reburn.
The key here is most menu structure is still intact i.e all ifo & bup, & all the first VOBS of each menu choice is still there, even if the subsequent stuff isnt.
As for hacking, striping and getting onto standalone working afterwards besides what is mentioned above i am having the same trouble !!!

as per my post above i have used an a03 to create 10 horror dvds - straight backups, no messing with strycture or size
& 2 hacked size dvds incl amex beauty using methods above.
all play fine on my sony set top

Bobpants, What firmware version is your drive? Also your initial post said you had the same problem - How did you get around it? What media do you use?

Firmware - i have no idea - tell me how to check & i will - i use win 2k
I do still have the same problem but only with discs where i re-edit the structure i.e remux, or try to get movie only etc.
Where i just straight backup or just remove unecessary vobs other than than the 2_0.vob & 3_0.vob etc (i.e the menus first reference point for each new vob set number), it has worked ok.
media - infiniti works fine + i have some generic dvdr's from the states which work fine too
cheers

To check the firmware right click on your drive within Instant CD+ and it will tell you the version number.

Guys,
just borrowed a dvdr copy of The Art Of War,
Which works in my standalone.
Using my A03 dvdr Firmware 1.55 made a copy which also worked on my standalone.
Been trying to rip + copy myself but still have the same probs with my standalone!
Ripped+copyed C.Angles , worked fine on pc even with the menus too.
So what are we missing .
Please help before i get any madder!!!

Use SPRUCE-UP to create a DVD from mpeg video and ac3 audion files. Works a treat in my standalone Toshiba. Even created my own menus - Toystory 2.

OK,
sussed it, basically the dvd starts it goes off to wherever it likes on the disc to put up copyrights, studio logos etc., goes onto movies, graphics, extras.
so the following are ways to rip -
rip the main movie or just streams of it (mpg & ac3) & use spruce up to join with simple menu created yourself. (beware of 16:9 ratio you need to amend the ifo).
or rip the menu & all the necessary vob to keep the running order intact but remove the extras.
or rip the main movie vobs and create a new ifo to run automatically on starting.
and recode as necessary if the movies is too big.
the best site i have found for all of these is....
http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/
using ifoedit and vstrip, looking under faq for some good guides
cheers
