I have VD installed ver 1.20.4 32bit on a w7 64bit machine
Seem to have got myslef confused (or system corrupted)

I have installed a lot of different codec
XVID, HUFFY, Lagarith , HQX, ffdshow etc

Yet when I drop a simple DV.avi file onto VD ( ..... full processing mode selected) ... when I look under codecs all I see are:

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/xx351/Tafflad/computer%20stuff/Video%20-%20Digital%20image/codec%20VD_zpsgfyg6xnu.jpg

Yet if I look under msinfo on PC I see a lot more :

http://i771.photobucket.com/albums/xx351/Tafflad/computer%20stuff/Video%20-%20Digital%20image/W7codec_zpsko0rrymz.jpg

What am I doing wrong ?

As an attempt, deleted VD and downloaded new version.
Also then downloaded again .... Cedocia, HQX, Lagartith & Huffy .... all finish install without errors .. and show under Window codec check.

Errors still the same ... codecs not showing in VD .... all 4 do show under msinfo

you probably should use the 32 bit version of Virtualdub.

sargan

I am using the 32 bit version... as I use it with 32 bit Avisynth and was advised to keep them (& plugins) all 32 bit

Just to try something else .. removed VD .. cleaned out all VD items from Registry.
Download new 32 ver and retried - same .... none of the download codecs show.

I'm sorry, then I have no idea.

All the codecs from your file list are in System32 and therefore 64 Bit versions. Did you install the 32 bit versions (which would reside in SysWoW64)?

Maybe I screwed things up ..

But to check I just downloaded Cedocia
the instruction says
"For installing Cedocida DV, DVCPRO25 and DVCPRO50 Codec (caution: your current installed DV/DVCPRO25/DVCPRO50 codecs will be replaced):
==> right click on "cedocida.inf" and select install"

That is what I did ...

and I just did it again. Still no change.
It does have a separate folder x64 with a single dll in it (cedocida.dll) no install '.inf'

Can you try UT Video from here (http://umezawa.dyndns.info/archive/utvideo/) (utvideo-15.4.0-win.exe)?

What does 'Basis Q' in the thread title mean?

What is 'VD ver 1.20.4 32bit' - a typo perhaps?
(Latest legit VirtualDub (https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub/) is ver 1.10.4)

I have VD installed ver 1.20.4 32bit on a w7 64bit machine

Me would guess, 'basic question'.

Yet when I drop a simple DV.avi file onto VD...

Interesting. Does it change if you open something else, tga image maybe?

sargan
7th February 2016, 19:52
To confirm VD ver is 1.10.4 - sorry about typo and it does show as X86 version.

If I open VD without a file .... none of the codecs I installed show only those in the picture in post #1
If I open my DV AVI file .. exactly the same.
If I open an xvid file ... same again.

In case it is just something 'stupid' by me ............ new install of VD. - simply drop file on VD or open a file ... it opens dual pane mode.
I can apply filters .. or load a file with filters via avisynth.

It is just no options to compress that I want.

I installed the UT codec suite.

No change from the point of view what I can see in VD when I look under 'compression' :

Looks similar to problem in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1755901#post1755901).
My suggestion is the same, purge all codecs:
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
and delete everything that begins with "vidc.". Leave exactly one codec (c210) for easy experiment.
Dont forget to backup registry beforehand.

sargan

In that thread it does say "Even deleting "all VIDC.* entries" would possibly be overkill. "

There are 33 vidc.x entries ... I can do this, but want to double check first (always touchy about registry changes)

Well I am sure these keys are not critical for system and cannot disable anything beyond these codecs.

Just run a list of video codec on PC with NIRSOFT.

Here is attached list of codecs from NIRSOFT report for my PC ..... seems to show all codecs are present.
Not sure if things are correct ........ Lagarith downloaded gives no choice of 32 bit or 64 bit ....
It has installed in sytem32 so would that work with 32 bit VD ?

I have also downloaded Huffy ... the 32bit version.
I right click on .inf file to install ..... a very fast popup window appears & disappears (too fast to read) but no error

Neither of these show as being installed in SysWow64 ??

Huffy does not show at all (unless it is know by other name)

Well, removing all registry entries for VfW video codec is quite brute; but separating "known good" codecs from suspicious ones takes some experience. To be on the safe side, export this branch first to have a backup.

Attachments always take a while to get approved. Let's see later what's in it.

Was it "InstalledCodec" tool? Just got it. So you can try disabling codecs with it, it modifies registry keys to do this anyway. But much easier to control.

"Neither of these show as being installed in SysWow64"

This isnt necessary, "windows\system32" file path is virtualized and points to different locations depending on program using it.

LigH

Waaah, this codec reports mixes all the VfW codecs and DirectShow filters and ... didn't read any further. The registry branch export would have been sufficient, I guess.

The least known codec to me was the Toshiba yvu9. But overall, you really do have a lot of codecs. Even rather old ones (e.g. Indeo 3.2 and 4.1). A cleanup may not ne the worst idea.

If the NirSoft codec report tool is a 32 bit application, it will only see the 32 bit system directory camouflaged as Windows\system32 even though it is named Windows\SysWOW64. "Windows is a rootkit"; it hides true disk content from the user.

ON .. thanks for the virtulaized explanation .. what about Huffy .. I have installed 2.1.1 yet see no mention of it in the list ?

It was "Installed codec tool" .... but never used it prior to getting this report.
Willing to try using it .......... suggestions on what to disable, maybe the vidc ones as mentioned ?

Unless you have another idea as to what could be blocking me seeing codecs in VD

shekh
7th February 2016, 23:22
Yes, disable only vidc.

LigH
7th February 2016, 23:27
Only the entries starting with "vidc." - important! Other entries are certainly vital still.

And Huffyuv ... well, possible that its FourCC was taken over by ffvfw, which is recommendable over the original Huffyuv 2.1 in this case, because it fixed a few bugs and also supports YUV 4:2:0 (FourCC: FFVH).

sargan
7th February 2016, 23:49
OK good news .... disabled vidc and they all appeared in VD

I guess now I need to do it groups to narrow it down.

OK ... got the bugga !!!!

It was codec VIDC.RTV1 wonder if I picked this up as I have an MSI graphics card and this is an MSI afteburner codec.

AS you mentioned I have a load of codecs can you suggest a load I can remove ?

LigH
8th February 2016, 01:19
IMHO, I would certainly leave all entries related to codecs by Microsoft, and probably remove all codecs of formats I don't plan to use for encoding and I would have covered by libavcodec for decoding.

(You may even like to re-assign some raw YUV formats previously handled by msyuv.dll to be handled by ffvfw instead; msyuv has more restrictions converting planar/packed formats criss-cross.)

And a final thank-you or being determined to discover the reason. :thanks:

Ligh, are you saying v2.1.1 had bugs, I am aware of bugs in v2.2.0 but not in v2.11.

Thank you in advance.

LigH

I am sorry to tell you I don't have time to dig into the history of Huffyuv. Many people seem to have fixed here and changed there. All I know is that ffmpeg's implementation is superior to the original code of BenRG. But what happened in the meantime, I don't remember in detail. If I had to choose between a set of separate Huffyuv codecs and ffdshow, I would prefer ffdshow/ffvfw here. Me, personally. I don't want to make any claims though which of the many separate implementations can be considered stable and trustworthy for YUV 4:2:2 encoding. Most of them will not support YUV 4:2:0 though.

Thanx Ligh, was just that you wrote original Huffyuv 2.1 and not 2.1.1, so I thought I ask,
dont matter really, I've never had problems with 2.1.1.
