eedi3_rpow2 vs nnedi3_rpow2

Hi Guys,

I'm currently upscaling some 720x576 50p to 720p for burning to Blu-ray.

I've been having great success with nnedi3_rpow2 with BlackmanResize for a cshift but note eedi3 has an upscale function also?

Is one better than the other in one way or another? I currently use eedi3 with nnedi3 sclip with QTGMC for interpolation with great results.

Some say EEDI3 gives a more natural look than NNEDI3, but it's a LOT slower! I find it also has more anti-aliasing than NNEDI3, and works well where NNEDI3 doesn't give such a good output.

IMO, both give a blurry output compared to NNEDI3+SuperRes or SuperResXBR (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=172698)

It depends what kind of performance you find acceptable and what kind of result you're looking for.

Try out the various options on a freeze frame and compare the images side-by-side. I generally use VirtualDub to open the various scripts, move to a specific frame, copy the frame to the clipboard and paste them into Photoshop for comparison.

I've actually been looking at that SuperRes page as you posted. I can definitely notice an improved sharpness between pictures three and five.

I'm at work at the moment and only have TeamViewer to the home PC so I'll do some testing with certain frames and see what I observe.

I'm not overly concerned about speed, just the outcome. Currently with QTGMC and the upscaling, I'm getting around 1.7fps in single threaded mode :P
