MPC HC makes PC freeze (DXVA, x64, Radeon R390)

Hi,

I am using the latest MPC HC version on my Windows 10 machine, Core i5 2500k, Radeon R9 390 card, and when I playback a MKV file containing h264 content, sometimes my PC completely freezes. I get no entries in windows eventlog, no bluescreen, the PC simply stands, image on the screen frozen, no mouse movement possible, numlock not reacting.

It's not reproducable with certain videofiles, files that normally work perfectly suddenly produce this errors, always at doubleclick, i.e. at the beginning of playback. And always different files.

To me, it looks like a bug in the latest AMD crimson driver, in combination with DXVA probably. The card is not overclocked, works stable in games and apps, so this seems like a really strange problem with MPC-HC only. Any ideas what the solution might be?

WHen you say latest is that nightly or their prod release for MPC-HC? Try nightly. Also Id try the nightly LAV filters configured as external filters and disable all the internal mpc-hc ones to see if that fixes it. You can easily uninstall them both if it doesnt resolve it.

I think i have this problem myself, R9 380.
It's a bit rare (by counting the number of times i open videos), but not That rare.
But it seems the same as Jackie, i just open files and randomly one can cause a total freeze.

Thought it was overclock at first but as i have been going by default clocks and only use Power Limit 20% i doubt that's the cause.
Using latest Catalyst driver, though i have manually installed the latest Crimson Driver (16.1.1) through device manager.

I can confirm i have the same problem on my R9 380, same exactly as OP, random when opening a file (double click) the pc completely
freeze, i use the 1.7.10 stable version.

Any solutions to this?

Update to latest driver 16.2.1 or downgrade to latest stable pre-crimson one 15.7.1.

If nothing helps, then disable DXVA.

I will upgrade to the new 16.3 Beta,
and see if i encounter the problem again.
