1800~2000kbps Bit rate, but still blurry and under saturated...why?

Like the subject says, I use between 1800 and 2000 kbps data bit rate(usually fitting on 3CDs) and I use gknot and nandub to do the SBC job. I usually stick to the default setting. anyway, the final output quality is good in terms of not seeing the blocks in any motion, but the picture is undersaturated and the focus is rather blurry.

If I compare to the original DVD, the picture is much clearer and sharp on DVD. I think 2000kbps is more than enough for a 2pass SBC to achieve 95% of the original quality. (It comes out to half compression, e.g. 4gb vob down to 2gb divx.)

Which setting can I change to get more vivid, clear, and saturated pictures?

If you are using bilinear resizing, you will want to change to a bicubic filter, as it is a bit sharper. For the saturation, you might want to try using the "hue/saturation/intensity" filter by Donald Graft.

I thought Precise Bilinear was used for resizing to a smaller resolution and Precise Bicubic was for resizing to a larger resolution.

Either way I use Precise Bilinear as it does a better job. Looks sharper and cleaner. Tends to be alittle bigger in size though.

Well, according to my experience and the guides on this site, bicubic will always look sharper than bilinear.

The last DVD I just ripped was the Rat Race( very funny movie) btw
and all settings the same except for bicubic and bilinear..... bilinear looked better. Go figure. Same for another movie... Johnny Mnemonic. :rolleyes:

I wasn't trying to say that bicubic looks BETTER than bilinear, just that it is sharper.

Some movies look better encoded with bilinear, but they are a minority IMHO.

@hjl113: try changing the brightness, contrast and saturation from the divx playback settings - it's easier than applying additional filters on encoding.
The dvd may seem to be much more colorful than the divx in case you're using some color corection in your dvd player. For example Powerdvd has some presets like Vivid color.

and yes, I think I'll just change the brightness/contrast/saturation setting in the divx player rather than adding a filter.
