Hi there,
I'm a newbie at all this ripping and encoding.
I've searched topics here regarding interlaced movies but couldn't get a clue cause all of it seems to technical to me.

I didn't have any probs with film-progressive type of the dvds, but this one is giving me headaches. I've tried it multiple times already with no good results. This was my last attempt that didn't do any good.

OK, here's the stuff: DVD NTSC 4x3 interlaced russian movie abt WW2. In dvd2avi it shows as interlaced with 29 something frames. When I do default on DVD2SVCD with 2vbr passes image on my standalone svcd/dvd player comes out choppy. Seems like extra frames are playing back on fast motion. There's also some blockiness in fast motion areas. In slow motion all is fine.
dvd2svcd: v 1.0.6 build 4
Setting in Encoder tab: vbr:2, Image Quality Priority: 25, with every other check boxes checked
dvd2avi: forcefilm is Off
resize: bicubic
temporal smoother:2 radius:1
everything else at default, audio tabs don't apply here.

I'd like to get an advice from you guys how to decode this rip to view on regular TV set with stanalone dvd/svcd player.

Is it important do deinterlace the movie? Cause somewhere I've heard it's just an option. How pulldown is affecting interlaced movie, maybe I should disable it somehow?

Well I'm completely lost with this one.
I'd like to share this movie with ppl cause here in US they haven't seen those russian made movies abt WW2. DVD itself is not encrypted, but has many features as english tracks and subtitles.

Help me please.

Hello Kairat,

welcome to the forum - and btw good first posting. ;)

Now to your problem. As it seems to be very urgent, try to use "Smartdeinterlace" in "Conversion" tab of dvd2svcd. But as i've never done NTSC stuff this is just a guess (i'm only doing PAL).

And a time saving hint for you:

Try these settings with only one or two chapters. - Use internal routins for ripping, select the *.ifo and right after the movie length shows up in the pulldown - click on it. You will see a little window which shows all the chapters available. Just mark one or two and hit the "Go" button. After the conversion burn the image to a CD-RW and try it with your standalone. If it plays just fine then go for a conversion of the whole DVD.

Thanks gerti67

I'll try that.
....

...done with a trailer :) Seems allright - no more ghoust frames or jerking video.

One more thing-problem with DVD2SVCD it won't rip DVDs which have some kinda complex structure. Mine got lots of languages and subtitles. I had to resort to smartripper to rip the movie or chapters.

Be careful with trailers, there are sometimes other stuff than the movie itself. It is better to use inernal routines for ripping and to select one single chapter of the movie. (You can do this with the pulldown near the movie length in conversion tab)

Thanks guys :)
I'll do single chapter. What's the other stuff? (stupid question?)

They say that if you're using NTSC you have to set it on force film, why I do not know...

SOD,
force film works only for the progressive type of the movies where film ratio is greater 95%.
In my case when movie is 100% interlaced different approach is needed

What I've been doing is this:
1.rip a single chapter of each DVD
2.preview it in DVD2AVI, recording the aspect ratio, NTSC or FILM(>95%), and interlaced or progressive.
3.Then I just set the values in DVD2SVCD to whatever DVD2AVI said it was and let it go. I do this since DVD2SVCD doesn't recognize whether it needs to deinterlace or not.
I'm not sure which tab has force FILM settings, but if it says NTSC or <95% FILM, I leave it to auto; otherwise I set force FILM on. Since I started checking all DVDs out first, I haven't had a single problem, and it only takes like 10 mins.

Gerti, you know how I like to volunteer you! :)

When I read this post I see the constant confusion between "true" Interlace and telcined material as if they have something to do with each other. I like what D.Graft has been doing by calling telecined material "Combed" to help the understanding of the total difference. If you are ever in the mood you might want to add to the Q&A.

BTW, don't be bashful about editing, adding, or even changing the Q&A. Everybody has complete confidence in you to do that.

Hi DDogg,

thanx for that. :)

I'm right now planning to add something to the Q&A the next day or so

- How can I encode just one (some) chapter(s) for testing purposes for example?
- How can I avoid encoding (crop) the TV overscan area to increase the available bitrate for CCE?
- How can I get rid of the black borders of a 16:9 movie?

as these questions came up here in the recent days and especially the "chapter question" should be useful to point someone to if you want him to test some things with only a chapter so you don't have to explain this again and again.

With the true interlaced and the telecined question - hmm - I will see as I've done only PAL till now and am not that much into NTSC - but I will see. ;)

Gerti
