Optimal bitrate for 2048 x 1536?

Hi.

My Question is what bitrate is optimal for 2048 x 1536, I understand it's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" type of query, as I can't find many video comparisons I can download with different bitrates so I can compare.

Has anybody done this testing or have a link to it at this resolution?

Mainly wondering what the difference would be from 4 to 6 to 8 to 10 megabit at 15 frames per second.

Is "Optimal", your way of saying "Best" ?

It all depends upon the source, there is no magic formula.

Figure out your preferred rate factor at other resolutions, use it on the larger resolutions, never worry about setting bitrate again.

If you don't know where to start, I'd try short tests with crf 24, 21, 18, and 15. That's roughly comparable to your 4/6/8/10 mbits and shouldn't take too long.

There is no such thing as an optimal bitrate.

If you are limited by bandwidth (eg over a network link), use VBV to apply that limit.

If you are limited by disk space, use 2-pass and aim for an appropriate file size.

If you just want something that is as small as possible while still retaining "good enough" quality for your own personal judgement, then you have to rely on your own personal judgement. Though in this case you'd need to target CRF rather than bitrate, as the bitrate for reaching this point will vary according to source characteristics. For that high-res, maybe start at CRF 21 and adjust upwards and downwards until you find a quality level that satisfies you.
