Keeping DVD Menu's after Stripping Audio Tracks

Right now I am working on Shrek. I have been able to get the file size down after learning from Chumboy how to get rid of the extra scenes. The menus work fine and so does the main movie. Now my problem is that when I go to into IfoEdit and strip everything but the Dolby Digital track, the movie plays, but now without the menus. I know I must be doing something wrong.

aight this is what i do....

open the ifo file associated with the menu

then go to menu extra's

do the stripping option, when it says what i want to strip, i merely click cancel, and it seem to fix the vobu pointers

try getting the movie ready in another directory (using ifoedit).
get each other vob set ready in another directory.

then, move all the pieces back into the original directory where the original video_ts.ifo, etc. files are.

open video_ts.ifo in ifoedit and get vts sectors.

i think that will work.

I am having also a lot of problems with Shrek R1.
I am a movie-only DVD, reduced insize with ReMPEG, but the resulting
DVD refuses to play on a Pioneer DV-343, while it plays ok on
a Raite/Tokai 723... There must be something wrong with the IFOs.
As a side note, if I was striping every vob-id other than 5 and 6, which are the main movie, the results would have incorrect
chapter pointers (the movie would start playing at chapter 3
although chapter 1 and 2 were there). So definitely sounds like
an IFOEdit bug.

Got the Menu to work. Thanks for the info Chumboy.I just kept the Video_TS_* and VTS_01_0 files and moved the new VOBs and Ifo for VTS_01_0 back into the ripped folder. Too bad the movie is still 4.8 GB. Must be all that CGI and high frame rate.

glad to hear your success.

you should rempeg if it's still too big. in fact, you can probably rempeg just the first vob to 50% (5000 bit rate limit). that usually cuts the first vob down to half it's original size. 500 meg just might get you under the 4.3 limit.

would reducing just one VOB to 5000 work? I mean, it wouldnt trip up the DVD player when reading different VOBs at different resolutions? You mentioned that the VOB would come out half the size, should I expect the picture quality to be reduced by the same? Would it look more like VHS or what?

i've done it successfully on one dvd and the quality (believe it or not) is very acceptable.

I tried what you suggested. I used ReMPEG to cut it down to a mx bitrate of 5000. However, the project always seems to stall at 99%, so I press cancel and try to use the resulting .m2v file in Ifoedit to remux. But when I followed the instructions I saw that you posted earlier, nothing happens, no file results. I picked the M2v file, didnt check any extra boxes, but nothing happened. Could it be because the project was never completed in ReMPEG in the first place?

recheck your cffl file to make sure the entire path of the file is there.

i've had it stall on me at 99%, but the file was ok.

if your m2v file size is about "whatever % reduction you chose" under the original vob file, then rempeg2 did it's job correctly.

maybe your mistake is after that, when using ifoedit? open vob extras, leave all checkboxes as they are, select m2v file, AND save the new vob file to a sub-directory named VIDEO_TS.

open newly created movie video_ts.ifo file, get vts sectors.
you're done.

ok I am remuxing now in IfoEdit (Thanks Chumboy). Have you noticed that the .m2v file is a little dark when you view it in MPEG2AVI? I am regretting it now but in retrospect, I should have brightened it up in ReMpeg2. Oh well, at least it works eh?

i wouldn't be too concerned about the darkness in dvd2avi.
it doesn't specialize in reproducing the exact color.

i think you'll be happy with the brightness in the final vob's when you play on 'puter or tv.

When you ReMpeg a movie what media are you using to play on a standalone player? I've found that I can only playback correctly with no errors on Pioneer branded media, be it DVD-R or DVD-RW. When I use any other brand I get choppy scenes, digital noise, frames blending in and sometimes it freezes during playback. I have a Pioneer DV-C302D. When a main movie fits without rempeg they play perfectly fine. Most of my DVD-R media is from http://www.meritline.com and my burner is a Pioneer A03. Any feedback?
