Gradient or frequency domain: what counts more edges and textures of an image?

Note: if we consider a good transformer to gradient information and a good transformer to frequency domain. Please, help me, because I need this for my upscaling algorithm. I had some ideas for gradient, however I want your advices! I will be so glad if you reply me.
