View Full Version : Looking to learn how to recognize deinterlacing artifacts

I would like to know if it exists some kind of general guide that shows examples (screenshots or videos) of all kinds of the most usual deinterlacing artifacts so that i can adjust deinterlacers settings. I am asking this and i am having a lot of trouble of even knowing WHAT to look in the image that might be wrong, or if the problems were already present on the original interlaced video already or not.

I already know how to recognize the most obvious ones, like aliasing, dotcrawl, rainbow, ghosting and even shimmering, even tough in the case of shimmering i have still a lot of trouble recognizing it most of the times and i am only able to recognize it better with vertical motion on a video with horizontal surfaces (like stripes on a shirt or stairs). But what else is there ? Just reading written text of the descriptions of the artifacts isn't enought to me because sometimes the way of a person describing them can be quite subjective and even the naming of the artifact isn't the same, so i prefer actual screenshots or small video clips.

Sure i know that some people will advise google, and i already did that but unfortunately the information i want is WAY too spread out on the internet, and i have to SPECIFICALLY search for each of all of the deinterlacing artifacts in a list since i didn't found any guide that had most artifacts in a single page (and most of the times there's not even images or examples, just a text description), which means, this will take a very long time, which could be saved if someone here happens to know already a few good guides, or could even do me a big favor and show me screenshots of the artifacts, specially the less usual ones, but i understand that's probably asking too much.

There are a old basic guide about deinterlacing here http://www.100fps.com/
Maybe is very basic for you but can help to beginners.

See DATA folder on mediafire below in my sig for "Exotic Interlacing" by Scharfis_Brain (English translation from German).

StainlessS,

It looks like there is only one file in your Sendspace account, and no "DATA" folder. I was looking there just the other day for some files of yours and noticed that everything was gone.

@johnmeyer

Look in StainlessS' MediFire account. SendSpace automatically deletes inactive files.

Where do I find his Mediafire account? His signature and his profile both send me to SendSpace.

John there are two links in my sig, MediaFire is one on the left.
I'll update the sendspace files but DATA folder will not be included, only plugins.
EDIT: SendSpace deletes files not downloaded for 30 days (I think).
EDIT: Added Exotic Interlacing to SendSpace too.
EDIT: I added ':::' between links in sig.

My bad. It looked like one single link, not two. Thanks!

Indeed it's very basic, but i already knew it, still thanks anyway for the intention to help.

Thanks for that, altough i do have a bit of hurry in a specific tvshow i want to deinterlace can you or someone have a look at this in case this is a simple case of deinterlace?

I am recording a SD brazilian tvshow (made in 2008), which is re-running now in europe and in japan in a HD tv channel, so the current broadcast is made in 1080p even though the tvshow was recorded with SD cameras.

I have extracted the EXACT same scene from the same episode and same frames, in three different recordings :

I have a recording from 2008 (480p original broadcast.mpg) in which the original broadcast was made in a dvd recorder on LP quality (352x480), in which when i use QTGMC i get quite a good looking deinterlacing without nearly any ghosting and shimmering, despite being PAL-M.

Unfortunatly in these re-runs it's not that easy, the re-run in europe (which is PAL 25fps) is made by a friend of mine that can only use a tvcapture card using HDMI (i think the card does hardware encoding and deinterlacing which i think it can't be turnoff) and has some kind of deinterlacing that causes some ghosting, but since the majority of recordings was already made like this, i don't mind continuing to have this quality. He sent me a sample downscaled to 720p (720p downscaled.ts) if necessary i can ask him to send a 1020p version, but he doesn't know how to turn off the deinterlacer on the capture card (it's a external usb device).

But now recently i got another friend that is able to get DVB-S direct feed to a usb pen drive without any re-encoding (pdtv 1080p.ts), from the same channel in japan, which has considerably more quality than the recording from europe obviously, but unfortunately ANY deinterlacer that i try using on this causes the DOUBLE ghosting than there is already on the 720p sample.

What i would like, would be AT LEAST to be able to deinterlace the 1080p recording to something similar to the 720p sample, in which there is only some ghosting, but nothing compared to the 1080p sample.

Can any one help or it's best creating a new thread just for this?

The "480p original broadcast.mpg" is actually 352x480i (interlaced) at 59.94 fields per second. It is horizontal half-DVD resolution (Half D1) which can be be properly deinterlaced and resized, because the file is basically ok.

The other 2 files - although better resolution - seem to be butchered: Wrong aspect ratio and blended frames and fields.
I doubt that the pdtv 1080p can be properly restored at all, but I didn't try much.

Yeah i know that the original broadcast is already interelaced, i forgot to mention that the sample i sent is the original video i used with the QTGMC filter and not the exported de-interlaced video with QTGMC applyed, the reason is that i provided this so that the person seeing this would try a deinterlacer as well on this video extract.

Yeah unfortunately i am afraid that the 1080p version is butchered since it gets more blending than the 720p version, altough still i would prefer a lot the 720p than the half d1 version, but i am hoping a few more people try this, since i didn't want to waste the 1080p version without being really sure it's INDEED butchered or just needing a different kind of deinterlacer, even tough i am getting it ONLY in midway of the long tvshow series, the majority of the tvshow is encoded as in the 720p version so it won't be much of a problem to me, but i would still prefer to be sure that the 1080p isn't worth it and is actually worse than the 720p version.

I sent that particular video scene because in the boots of the officers it's quite noticeable the blending.

Just a sidenote: You shouldn't name interlaced files with a suffix "p" (for progressive), but with "i" (for interlaced) to avoid confusion. Actually only your 720p file is "p" (progressive). It has been framerate converted to 25 fps, loosing half of the temporal resolution due to the deinterlacing.
Maybe someone else can help with the 1080i file. Is has not only blended fields but also ugly encoding artefacts in the critical boots scene.

Sorry i completly forgot about the suffix thing, maybe i will update that in the files, but i am not sure if it's worth anymore, unless i made a separate thread just for this. Anyway, maybe the 1080i file is irrecuperable and the 720p is still a better alternative then...

Note that i am not actually looking into a way to remove encoding artifacts in the 1080i version, i only want to be really sure if it's a problem of using the wrong deinterlacer or it's REALLY the way the video was broadcast on satellite is wrong, because if the problem isn't about using a wrong deinterlacer well... i won't definetly waste any time trying to filter the "ugly artefacts" and will gladly prefer the 720p version since it's the only alternative i have to the 480i one.

Update : i got another opinion from another person that understands a lot and he confirmed what you and i already suspected : the tv broadcast of these episodes in the 1080i version ALREADY come with interlaced blending/ghosting which is impossible to remove no matter which deinterlacer i use so... i have no choice but to stick to the 720p version, not because being 720p but because apparently the guys running the channel on japan did a lousy job of converting it on 29.970fps since here on the european version in 25fps we don't see those encoding artifacts and the interlaced blending and ghosting... Even tough there's also some minor blending too like you said but definetly a lot better than the japanese version of the channel so i presume this is "case closed" :D
