Cannot play all chapters

When playing DVDs that I have ripped to my hard drive, using doom9's guide, I sometimes encounter a rip that will not play all chapters. It plays fine up to a certain chapter and then restarts at the beginning. Additional chapters are available in the shortcut menus, but selecting one merely restarts with chapter 1. Usually, I am able to encode them to an AVI without problem, but I am not able to view the entire movie using the ripped VOBs and a software player. DVDs I have encountered like this include: Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Kiss of the Dragon. Has anyone else encountered similar behavior?

For decoder, I use Smartripper 2.34. For players, I use WinDVD 2000 or PowerDVD 4

Why hasn't someone replied to this post?? I am a newcomer and have experienced the identical problem... Use Smartripper (backup option) to your hard drive and then attempt to play the movie back using (in my case) WinDVD. The chapters are screwed up, and some chapters play the wrong sections of the movie. And yet, WinDVD plays the original movie perfectly. What gives?

well i can't really help you... maybe try posting under a different name like "hd rip won't play full" so it is more descriptive

maybe try to get the newest version of windvd...
i assume you are using a viritual drive to play it with (subst)?
could try loading each vob into a playlist, but you wouldn't get audio channel options or subs or channels but it might play thru???

most people don't have enough hd space to store movies too long w/o encoding them so that is the main priorty of ppl here i believe (i would never do that because i slow in watching movies, i have dvd's that i bought and didn't watch untill a month after, ones i hadn't ever seen before)

The answer turns out to be: WinDVD 2.3 does not support playback from the harddrive if the original ripped DVD has dual layers (I am talking about full mirror backup ripping). WinDVD 4 supports dual layer DVDs just fine.

Now the interesting part...
Pretend your a newbie and you are going through the Doom9 guides trying to solve the above problem. And you find a guide titled "DVD Playback from your Harddisk" Great! You go down to section that discusses playing back using WinDVD which contains the following sentences:

'Now press OK, then in the main WinDVD window press the play button and off we go. For some people WinDVD only plays the first player then stops. It works fine for me and there's no known workaround for this problem.'

The second sentence makes no sense. That is, until you remove one letter in one of the words. Do you see it. Remove the letter and suddenly you see the key to this issue. DVD drives are not the same as hard disk drives, and maybe it is the player, and not the ripping software.

Well, this newbie wasted 3 days in trying out different rippers. Finally, I ran across a post that started talking about single Vs dual layer DVDs, and got to thinking about the above instructions and first and second layers... you don't suppose doom9 meant...nah, it can't be that? Oh, yeah it could.

Once I discovered that my problem only occurred with dual layer DVDs, I switched my concentration to testing different versions of DVD players, and my problem was solved in no time.

Even experts should have their guides proof-read.
