View Full Version : Blu Ray drive locked or failed?

I was trying to rip my 24 season 8 disks with MakeMKV, and if I remember correctly the first time I attempted to it prompted me to select a region, which I did. After that it ran the initial scan and popped up with "Failed to read disk." I cleaned it and tried again with the same error, so I turned on automatic updates for MakeMKV, it found an update, still got the error. I tried another disk and it ripped it fine, tried the 24 disk a couple times with the same error, now the drive won't read any disk.

That was five failed attempts, so I don't know if it was a coincidence that the drive happened to fail then or if I used my allotted five region changes and locked it.

Any ideas? May be a moot point since I already ordered a new one, just curious if I need to look out for this happening again in the future.

Getting a new DVD drive is nothing, 20$, should this be the case. YOu can also patch the firmware to be autoselecting, if such FW exists for your drive (eg liteon, sony).

Anyway, even if the drive would be locked into a specific region, it won't do this - all discs of a series must have the same region.

I've seen I remember the case of another series wherein the first disc was better protected than the next ones.

Yes, however, since 24 did not appeared on blu-ray and you're talking about regions (not zones) I assumed you rip DVDs.

Should you try to rip BDs, then you can't have it locked, because it reads the rest of the discs. That means it hasn't been revoked.

Therefore you may not have the right key for the first disc.

How about this (http://www.amazon.com/24-Season-Complete-Final-Blu-ray/dp/B002ZCY7TG/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1440592557&sr=1-2&keywords=24&refinements=p_n_format_browse-bin%3A2650305011)?

It turned out to be two problems, I had the minimum title length set to 3600 (and all titles were under 60 minutes, hence the "Failed to open disk" message), and coincidentally the drive was failing.
